An exclusive mage who broke up with his alchemist childhood friend, wants to lead a slow life in a remote town – Chapter 68 – Kraken

There’s a kraken extermination quest on the board of the Minerva adventurer guild. Apparently it’s been attacking tourists who are visiting during the summer season.

I took down a superior variant, a king kraken, but apparently a normal one poses a considerable threat to regular people too, so it has to be taken out.

“It looks like a B rank quest.”

Says Lela, who is right next to me.

Mars isn’t here right now. He’s training with his sword.

“I don’t think I can accept it alone.”

“Then let’s do it together. There’s actually a chain technique I want to show you.”

“Chain technique?”

“Yes, I learned it recently with Mars. I activate lightning magic, it focuses on his sword, and he strikes with the element of lightning. It’s like the Enchant you did before.”

She learned a cool technique. It’s not something someone who’s typically alone like me would come up with. Its focus is wonderful.

I want to see their chain technique, so we accept the quest.

The next day. Mars, Lela, and I go to the Tetra island. This time we’re on a quest, not on a trip.

The word quest sounds so nice. Calling it work would be a real downer, but when you call it a quest, it sounds like a game.

Since neither can cast Water Protection, we have to approach the kraken in a different way.

We have two ways to draw it closer.

First, light a fire late at night to get it closer to the shore.

Second, ask Vermeer to lead it here.

I want to avoid the first one, because then we’d have to fight at night.

But I ask what the other two think.

“I want to meet Vermeer too.”

“Then I think that works too. If she refuses, we can just shift to the first option.”

It seems they’re on board. Let’s get that harp out of the item box.

“Let’s play it.”

“Ah, you can play the harp too, Loyd?”

“No, I’m just going to strum it randomly. The sound just has to reach nearby mermaids.”

“Hum, Loyd, ever heard of elegance?”

Asks Lela with an exasperated expression.

“That’s no good sensei. It’s a disservice to her. I’ll play instead, so let me borrow it.”

Says Mars, urging me to hand over the harp.

“Eh? You can play the harp, Mars?”

“Lela taught me a long time ago.”

“Mars has a good musical sense. He can play the piano and violin too.”

“Eh, that’s surprising. I’m no good with music. You can handle it then.”

I give Mars the harp, and he starts playing. It’s a clear sound, with the summer wind.

A minute later, the face of a mermaid pops out from the water.

“Wonderfully played, human. Very moving. Oh? That harp belongs to captain…”

The mermaid notices the signature, and I explain why we have it.

She nods deeply, and gladly accepts.

Ten minutes later, Vermeer appears.

“Hello again, Mister Loyd. And we have met you before, Mars. It is an honor to see you again.”

“I’m also happy to see you again.”

We introduce Lela to Vermeer too, and they quickly get along, like it’s not their first time meeting.

I’d love to have that natural communication ability. Someone develop magic that ups communication ability for me.

“Vermeer, thank you for your cooperation.”

“No no, I’m glad to have the opportunity to repay my debt. By the way, how far should we take the kraken?”

“It would help a lot if you could take it to that rocky area.”

I say while pointing to the rocky area Iris and I found.

We have a good view from there, and since the low tide will be here soon, it will be advantageous for us if the fight drags on.

“Then I will take it there with my subordinates.”

“Thanks. I will use Lightning after I give the signal, so get away from it quickly.”

“Very well. It might turn back at some point, so tell me if it does.”

“Got it.”

With the plan in place, we head to the rocky area.

“Let’s review the plan. Once it gets close, I’ll use Lightning. It probably won’t go down to one hit, but once it’s stunned, use that Royal something.”

““Royal Magical Conflict Lightning Cross Slash.””

They say at the same time.

Too long. It sounds like such a pain to chant that every time. I’m surprised you can even say that without messing it up.

Let’s shorten it to Lightning Slash.

And then, we put the plan into motion and take down the kraken.
