An exclusive mage who broke up with his alchemist childhood friend, wants to lead a slow life in a remote town – Chapter 69 – Me in the past and me now

Not long after, a colleague of Vermeer arrives.

We’re all chatting and picking up magic stones after the kraken was brought down, when a mermaid suddenly pops her face out of the water.

She seems pretty flustered.

“We have trouble. You have an urgent message from Queen Undine.”

“An urgent message? What happened?”

Vermeer looks puzzled.

“Levithesis’ seal is being lifted!”

“E-eeeeh!? Levithesis!?”

She’s terribly shaken. Mars and Lela look very surprised too.

“Levithesis? I didn’t expect to hear that name here.”

Says Mars, cutting in as the other two talk.

“You know about it, Mars?”

“I heard about it from a merchant I know. It’s a giant sea dragon that was sealed in the underwater city of Almada. It’s a hundred meters long, and covered in purple scales that have the same magic reflecting effect as amethyst.”

“So magic doesn’t work?”

“Yes. I thought it was a legend, so I really didn’t expect to hear about it this way.”

Mars is sweating as he explains to Lela.

“I see, so it seems we need Mister Loyd’s help to stop it from returning.”

Says Vermeer all of a sudden.

Eh… Me? I can’t help but be surprised about my name being brought up all of a sudden.

“T-that’s incredible, Loyd!”

“Even an underwater race knows of your greatness, sensei. Global teacher Loyd, that’s you.”

I don’t know what Mars is on about.

“Hold on everyone! This is all too sudden, I can’t keep up. Is this going in the direction of me having to go with them?”

““““Yes.””””

Everyone nods.

No way…!?

No no, it sounds like a real pain. Why are they asking me? I’m definitely not the right guy.

“Mister Loyd… I know this is a lot to ask, but can you please accompany me to Almada? If Levithesis does revive, the whole Kingdom of Atlanta will be destroyed.”

Vermeer pleads while looking up at me.

Don’t look at me like that, it makes it hard to say no.

“I’m glad you trust me that much, but I still have to…”

“Loyd you idiot!”

Lela suddenly hits my face with her staff, making me spin in the air until I land with my face on the ground.

My whole body felt that, one of my molars is broken, and there’s blood coming out of my mouth.

“H-hey Lela. Hitting sensei with your staff is not…”

Mars says, looking a little taken aback, but Lela continues.

“There’s no charm to you right now! You used to help when someone was in need, without expecting anything in return!”

“…But it’s the legendary Levithesis. Magic doesn’t work, so it couldn’t be less compatible.”

“You can beat it easily. Remember that giant sandworm when we first met?”

“Levithesis and a giant sandworm are on two completely different levels.”

“Uu! Uu! Why do you have to work through that weird logic!? The old Loyd would’ve agreed without thinking twice!”

She says, and I stop.

“…!”

“The guy that fired Explosions in a row without a care and was labeled a dangerous guy shined a lot brighter!”

I’d rather not shine for negative reasons like that.

What she’s saying is crazy, but I get the point. Unlike half a year ago, I’m now able to make choices that aren’t wrong. But I’m also casting way fewer Explosions.

It’s strange, Lela complained so much about my lack of common sense, and now she wants the exact opposite.

She even complained when I helped a driver that one time. She said I should’ve used that money to help people that mattered to me.

And through my efforts, I’ve found multiple people that match that description in the last six months.

But what about Vermeer? Would she count as someone important to me?

I’m sorry to say but… Probably not. We are friendly enough, but I don’t know if I value her enough to stake my life on it.

But me from half a year ago would’ve leapt into action to help. Maybe I really have become a boring person like Lela says.

Back then, Lela scolded me harshly, but at the same time, she said I was incredible and she could never be like me.

Looking back, I think both were her true feelings.

Take action based on my morality regardless of wins and losses. I find it very hard to think that way right now.

I want to do what’s right, but I think I’ve become more passive than I was in the past without me realizing it.

“Lela.”

“What?”

“You approve of who I was in the past. What you said now makes me a bit happy.”

“Ehehe, I like the current Loyd too, but I like past Loyd more. Rather than thinking before acting, the way you acted and then worried about it like crazy was a lot more like you.”

She says as she casts healing magic. The pain in my cheek goes away, and my tooth is restored completely.

Vermeer is watching us, and speaks like it’s really hard for her to interject.

“Hum… So what happens with the issue with Levithesis?”

“It’s fine. I’ll go to Almada. I don’t know about giant underwater dragons, but I can beat that Levithesis with my fists.”

I say with a smile.

“R-really!? Thank you so much, Mister Loyd!”

“Now that’s Loyd!”

Both Vermeer and Lela look really happy.

“Hum, you’re all talking like Loyd is going to fight Levithesis, but shouldn’t we be making it so it doesn’t revive?”

Asks a confused Mars, but no one’s listening.

It’s settled, so Vermeer gets me a king turtle for the three of us to travel to the underwater city Almada.
