The day after we get through the ninety-fifth floor, we head to the reference room.
We need to talk about how to fight cerberus, but the beast king has trouble sitting still.
“I didn’t want to come.”
But apparently Nene said…
“If anything happened to you, I…”
Despite the whole lovey-dovey mood in the air, Nene doesn’t react.
And behind me…
“She has the beast king under control.”
“Yes, incredible.”
Whisper Rurika and Chris, and Figel sighs. Ryuryu also looks tired.
“…These two spells really are trouble.”
Says the beast king while looking over the materials. It looks like once he gets going, his power to focus is actually high.
Looking at his face in profile, he looks completely different from the person that was just grumbling.
Also, he’s talking about Hellfire and Hellwall.
Hellfire is a flame that keeps going until it burns its target, and we read about it the last time we were looking into cerberus.
The other, Hellwall, is similar, but defensive. That said, it can also be an offensive spell, since it also burns opponents if they touch it. It doesn’t keep going until the target has been burned to ashes, and it works for a fixed amount of time.
Also, this one works better on equipment than on people.
“Flames that not only block attacks, but destroy too…”
“It’s trouble.”
The beast king responds to Rurika while crossing his arms.
Yes, he’s right. Especially when it comes to weapons, since a lot are made with precious materials, or are rare and irreplaceable magic swords.
But still, there are adventurers who spend a lot of their money on equipment. I guess you would have to, to reach the top.
“But if we use mass produced weapons, who knows if our attacks will work.”
“Should we mainly attack with magic then? If we use magic in the middle of an attack, it can’t block it.”
“Sora, are there any signs that a Hellwall will come?”
Asks Chris, as the beast king and I try to work something out.
I look into what she asks, and there really is something written here about movements it does in preparation.
“…But we can’t just take it at face value.”
“Yes, we have seen monsters do things not mentioned in reference materials.”
Chris agrees with Nene.
Yes, we’ve seen them do things not referenced here, like the way they use magic.
“Chris, would grandma know something?”
“Grandma?”
“Yes, she knows all sorts of things…”
“Who is that?”
“You met her in Elesya, beast king. One of the elves that was captured…”
“Ah, that elf. But wasn’t she back in the republic?”
“Yes, but we can contact her.”
Says Rurika, and Chris looks at me. I think she’s checking if she can use it.
I nod, and she takes out the communications device to infuse it with magic energy.
Not long after, she starts talking. She looks happy, so I think she’s talking to Eris. It’s been a while.
Ah, Rurika and Sera are saying hello too.
“Is that a magic item to talk to people far away?”
“Yes.”
“Really? That tiny thing!?”
I explain, and the beast king is surprised.
“Did you get it in a dungeon or something?”
“…I made it.”
“…! Can you make more!?”
I shrink back as he gets way too close to ask that.
“The materials… If I have materials, but those choose people who use them.”
They use magic energy, so if someone doesn’t have it, they can’t use them.
Not to mention that I can’t make them without materials.
“That would make communications a lot easier. Well, we have others, but their consumption of magic stones is pretty severe.”
They’re also the type that you have to set, and can’t carry around.
“In any case, all we can do is hope that elf knows something.”
I peek at Chris, and she nods while taking notes.
So, does Morrigan know about cerberus? Or about Firewall and Hellwall?
Eventually, we all stop looking at the reference materials, and look at Chris instead.
We’re not slacking off, we just read everything we had to. It’s not like there’s a lot to read about the upper floors anyway, because fewer people reach them.
There sure is a lot about people getting upset about losing their equipment to cerberus though. In fact, since there was no real penalty for dying back then, some people even protected their equipment with their lives.
“So, do weapons stay in the dungeon when people die?”
“I think they come out of treasure chests.”
The beast king also got weapons when he was making his way through the upper floors.
After talking some more, Chris finally hangs up and tells us what she learned from Morrigan.
