I’m unemployed but I’m exploring the dungeon again today – Chapter 47 – Forty-third day

Today, I’m visiting the guild in the morning.

I’m taking a sewing course like I planned yesterday. And I get the first five for free.

I reported to a receptionist after I was done leading the new seekers yesterday, but wasn’t paid. Apparently they only pay you if you’re registered with the guild.

There are two ways to make money in the guild.

First, selling dungeon materials like I’ve been doing.

Second, accepting external requests, and getting paid upon completion.

The first one can be done without registering with the guild, but not the second. You can’t accept requests without being registered with the guild.

And since that whole guiding newbies around thing I did yesterday was a request from the guild, I can’t get paid without presenting my identification in the form of a guild card.

I’m not registered in the guild. Therefore, I have no card.

I told them that, and they said they couldn’t pay me then.

Of course, I complained. They made me do that, and then told me they couldn’t pay me. What’s the big idea?

All they told me was to make a guild card, and then they could pay me.

Such sloppy business. Making a card costs fifty thousand, and the reward is forty thousand. I’d be in the red.

Registering would be a waste of money, not a reward.

What do I even get from registering?

I kept complaining. I didn’t care if they called me a nasty complainer, this was my right.

I kept wailing, and the receptionist looked at a complete loss.

It was the critical moment. Dealing a good blow there would decide if they accepted my conditions.

And at the stage where my fight was really starting, the old lady receptionist that forced those newbies on me appeared.

The other receptionist explained what was going on, and the old lady whispered it couldn’t be helped, as she stood in front of me.

She was like the immovable Fudo Myo-o, and I sensed a firm resolution that meant she would not back down. That old lady was really strong, stronger than the warrior kobold even.

If we were to fight, I’d lose for sure.

But I couldn’t back down. Justice was on my side.

What are you going to do for me, grandma? I asked while looking down on her like a nasty complainer.

You’re not getting any money, she barked.

No no, you’re the one who said I’d get paid, I gently admonished, and she proposed I get things instead of money.

Honestly, I was thinking it was going to be hard for me to get money. She was so stubborn about it, that I wondered if they paid someone who wasn’t registered with the guild and there was trouble because of it.

It didn’t really matter if that was right, but I decided to accept her proposal.

I told her I agreed, and then followed her.

She took me to a storage room of sorts. I thought I was being taken to a conference room or waiting room, but no.

There were three sofas around a table, and plain but high quality looking table and chairs.

I sat on the sofa, and curled up.

I wondered if this old woman was actually pretty influential there. I could’ve asked, but I was afraid I’d leave empty-handed if I did.

She brought potions, weapons, armor, and some sort of tickets.

The potions were five regular ones, like the ones sold in the store. This was supposed to be an apology. And I could pick one thing from the other stuff.

She told me they were all worth more than the reward, but sadly, I didn’t really want any of them.

They were all stuff for beginners, so I’d have to sell them.

From a monetary point of view, that would be fine, but even if they weren’t worth much, I was scared of taking that from an authority figure. The potions were enough to cover my trouble, so I could just pick anything.

After pondering it, I picked the five tickets.

These are tickets for the courses I saw advertised in the store.

They only accept so many people, but ones with these take precedence. I took the tickets, told her I chose them, and got up.

And with nothing more to do, I left in a hurry.

◇ ◇ ◇

I get to the sewing classroom with a ticket in hand.

I hand it to a receptionist, and she asks me if I really want to use it, to which I reply where else would I use them. She doesn’t say any more, and takes it.

There are only about ten people here, two of which are women.

No one else comes in, and the lecturer starts without even a greeting.

Hm hm.

This is very easy to understand.

How to use the Sewing skill.

This skill isn’t just about hand-sewing going well. The real value is in sewing magic circles to cloth equipment, granting it special effects.

Also, it doesn’t have to be hand-sewing. This skill can be used with sewing machines sold by the guild, and by using magic energy, various effects can be attached to equipment.

Hearing about sewing machines brings me to my knees.

What about all the effort I…

I feel the multiple embroideries I made crying.

The course also teaches what special effects to attach.

Lastly, a book with a list of magic circles is placed on the podium.

And it can be purchased for a cheap million yen!

I jump at it, thinking it’s a good buy, and because I’m thinking there’s going to be competition for it.

But I’m the only one. I guess the others don’t see the value of this book.

What a shame…

Later I would go crazy upon finding a website that lists the magic circles, but that’s a different story.

◇ ◇ ◇

The twenty-second floor.

A silent condor is flying low towards me for once. And it’s charging straight ahead.

It’s strange enough for me to wonder if it’s a trap.

I use Earth Magic to try to stab it with a stake, but it accelerates the moment I do, and I hit nothing but air.

Then I shoot earth bullets in succession, but it dodges them with minimal movement while drawing closer.

I hold up my greatsword, and prepare for its tackle.

I drop my posture, use Physical Strengthening on my whole body. Come at me!

I’m prepared, but the silent condor changes direction just before reaching me, going up to the sky.

Of course, that’s not all. It raises dust that hinders my vision by flapping its wings.

And after one hinders my vision, another one charges at me.

It’s going for a sneak attack, but Spatial Grasp tells me where it is.

I thought that other one was moving in a strange way, but two silent condors really coordinate wonderfully. There’s only one of me, but they came up with a sure fire way to hunt me.

Maybe they aren’t going all out, but I’m sure they made the decision that without a good plan, they couldn’t beat me.

I’m honored, but I’ll show them it’s wrong.

I use Earth Magic to control the dust, and cover the silent condor that’s coming at me with it. Then I compress it like I’m clenching my fist.

The blood spurting shows me it worked.

The other one probably saw that, because it’s not attacking.

At first it looks wary because its friend was killed, but it eventually flies away.

Ahh, that went well. I didn’t think I could control a cloud of dust, but I managed it.

I did it with Earth Magic, Magic Energy Control, and Parallel Thinking. The fact that it worked shows I’m improving.

I feel like lately, my body gets sharper with each fight. To be more precise, ever since I got the Limit Break skill after beating the warrior kobold.

There’s still power behind this skill. The way to use it is vague, but I get it.

When I got the skill, the way to use it flowed into my head. I felt sick, because I’ve never had something mess with my head like that before.

Well, there’s no need to use this power for now, but I’m thinking of using it just once somewhere.

◇ ◇ ◇

I keep advancing, and get lucky, because I find the staircase to the twenty-third floor.

If I’m going any further, I’ll need to stay the night, so I decide to come back tomorrow or the day after that with camping equipment.
