“…Why? Why was my father attacked? He’s not a criminal…!!”
Mary was taken to the hospital by Yuugo and the others, and groaned with her eyes cast down in front of the room where her father was being treated.
Sakura was worried for her mental state, and put her hand on her shoulder, as Yuugo answered her question.
“They thought he was related to the school. The perpetrator saw him entering and leaving multiple times and made a mistake.”
“No way…! My father is just a gardener! He has nothing to do with this!!”
Mary’s grief echoed through the hall.
Her father was still unconscious, and she was shocked about fellow members of the Friends of the Night Society making such a mistake, and attacking an innocent person.
Sakura then continued.
“According to the doctor, his life is not in danger. However, many others have been hurt by the rampaging members of the Friends of the Night Society, meaning the doctors are understaffed and lack supplies, so his treatment was delayed…”
“That many people were hurt? Why? Shouldn’t it be over after they received power from Black Veil and had their revenge…!?”
“No way. If it was like that, Goto wouldn’t have gotten hurt. They’re drunk on power and justice.”
Yuugo’s answer pierced Mary’s heart.
He was right, the members of the Friends of the Night Society were rampaging in the name of justice, leading to a lot of victims.
They judged those they deemed to be evil, and threw around their weight against anyone trying to stop them.
They did not stop to think about whether that was really right, instead believing they were absolute justice. What was the difference between criminals and those blindly following Black Veil and continuing to create victims?
Mary thought there was none.
The state of the hospital and the city, her father being attacked… It was all invited by Black Veil and the Friends of the Night Society, a group that included her. She thought, before Yuugo spoke.
“…Come with me, Mary. It might be tough, but there’s something you have to see.”
Yuugo started walking, and Mary went after him with Sakura.
After a while, he stopped, opened a door, and they entered. When Mary saw the people there… And the person on a bed, she gulped.
“Delta, how is Ehn?”
“The medicine worked, and she’s asleep. They say she’ll be discharged tomorrow. The problem is…”
After walking into the room, Yuugo spoke to the big guy with a rugged appearance, Delta.
He answered the question, turned his eyes to the one sobbing silently on a chair, Cross, and had a pained expression on his face.
“…What happened?”
“Ehn was attacked by Black Veil last night. She was hurt badly, and…
“No! I was attacked… He came to kill me because I’m a criminal. Ehn was hurt in my place…!!”
Cross yelled, not agreeing with Delta’s answer.
After raising his voice, he fell limply on his chair, and covered his face with both hands while groaning about his regret.
“It’s my fault… It’s my fault Ehn…!”
Cross blamed himself, and Melt, who was there to see Ehn, consoled him. But he shook his head and continued cursing himself.
“I shouldn’t have come back…! If I didn’t, this wouldn’t have happened to Ehn. I should’ve died to the magic sword’s curse…!!”
“Stop that nonsense, Cross! Ehn and I wouldn’t want that!”
“But Delta…!!”
Cross’ face was full of tears, as his friend angrily grabbed him by the collar.
It was too painful, and the air in the hospital room was so heavy, that Mary felt as though she was watching from a distance and her fingertips began to grow numb.
Ehn, Cross, and Delta all had criminal records. It made sense for them to be targeted by Black Veil. But were their crimes heavy enough to warrant this?
Was there a need to cause so much anguish to people who paid for their crimes and were starting a new life with their friends?
Was what Black Veil did really just…
“Miss Mary, what do you think…?”
Asked Sakura as Mary began to question the justice touted by Black Veil and the Friends of the Night Society.
When Mary turned around, Sakura spoke to her with pain and anger seeping from her voice.
“Part of me also believed what Black Veil was doing was just. But looking at this situation…!!”
“…”
Sakura clenched her fists, and said no more after mustering her strength to say that, but… Mary understood how she felt.
She stayed silent as a murmur spread in her heart, and Ryuuga entered.
“There you are, Mary. The doctor said your father is awake.”
“My father…!?”
“Yes, you should come see him quickly.”
Mary nodded and rushed out of the room.
When she entered the room where she was previously… She faced her father.
