“I just press this switch?”
“Yes, that will activate the magic item and seal sound within a ten meter radius.”
After lunch, we start the operation from where we can see maroon bees.
I have a portable magic item that can be charged with magic stones. It looks chic, like it wouldn’t be out of place on a table at home. I thought it would be big and bulky considering its effect, but it fits on the palm of my hand.
Come to think of it, I heard these useful items aren’t mass produced and are pretty expensive, because they require the appropriate level of technology and materials. I wouldn’t have used it against slimes, so I didn’t know these existed, but looking at a specialist catalog showed me there are all sorts of things. It makes me want to know more.
“Master, this is a top of the line soundproof and sound canceling magic item. When it comes to regular ones, even chargeable ones need to be installed.”
“Eh? So are these portable ones pretty rare…”
“Yes. It was bought with the team’s funds, but suffice to say, it was in the hundreds of millions. There are not many out in the market. Thankfully, it can be repaired if it breaks, since it did not come from the dungeon. But that does not make it less rare, so please handle it with care.”
“Well, I do tend to take good care of things… But I’ll be careful.”
Actually, if this is man-made, does that mean I can reproduce it with a skill?
I use True Appraisal Lv4, Magic Stone Control II, Perception Strengthening II, Omni Detection, Weak Point Reading, Magic Iron Processing, Magic Stone Processing, and Magic Engraver, and start looking into information about the magic item.
Name: Sound blocking magic item
Classification: Magic item
Description: A man-made sound proofing and sound canceling magic item created using dungeon technology. It begins drawing energy from a magic stone when the switch is pressed. The diffusion device inside creates a faux barrier with a ten meter radius and a diameter of twenty meters. It remains active until the switch is pressed again or the magic stone runs out of energy.
Materials are magic iron and mithril… Especially worked to diffuse a magic stone… The shape of the parts…
“…I see.”
I think it might work out. But while I have a ton of magic iron, I don’t have mithril.
I didn’t see any reports that it drops in the beginner dungeon, so I guess I really would have to procure it from somewhere like the high rank dungeon.
“Master? Are you perhaps…”
“Yes, I am.”
“…?”
Everyone is surprised as they catch on to what we’re talking about.
Except Kasumi, who is tilting her head because she doesn’t know my skills.
“Anyway, can we move while this is active?”
“Yes, but while it is active, it refreshes the position of the barrier in a few seconds. If you suddenly move while it is active, you might find yourself outside the barrier, so please be careful.”
“All right.”
I see. The barrier isn’t always around the magic item as its center, it stays in place and disappears if not refreshed.
Looking at its construction, I feel like I could tinker with it a little and make it so it’s always active, but without materials, I can’t fix it if I break it… I should gather materials and try to replicate it when we get back.
‘Bzzzz.’
“Press.”
A barrier activates in front of a maroon bee. A transparent wave spreads from the magic item, enveloping me, the maroon bee, and the girls behind me.
‘Bzzzz.’
It looks like it doesn’t consider this an attack. I swing a sword with my other hand, and the maroon bee turns to smoke.
‘Vv! Bzzzz…’
Like yesterday, it lets out a shrill sound, but there’s no response from the red marks on the map. It doesn’t look like Killer Bees are spawning, so this seems perfect to take out base monsters.
If we ignore how difficult the setup is…
The device is pretty expensive, so could regular adventurers do this…?
“All right, let’s keep going.”
I charge the magic item’s magic stone every once in a while as we advance for a few dozen minutes. We’re now close enough to a Killer Hive surrounded by a scouting group to see it with the naked eye.
They should notice our presence when I turn off the barrier, but they’re not even turning this way. They really are inactive unless they’re attacked, even if you make noise near the hive.
“Well then…”
We start discussing the plan, far enough away that we can’t hear their wings.
“Aki, you didn’t go further than this, right?”
“Yes. I couldn’t be too reckless since multiple Killer Bees might spawn, and I had Kasumi with me.”
“I see. Then let’s make it so the barrier is just outside the hive and take out the monsters in a few groups.”
“Understood. Please handle the operation of the barrier.”
We easily finish cleaning up until there are no monsters around the hive.
So what now…
“Do you only have the barrier with a twenty meter diameter?”
“No, we have ones with half the diameter and an eight meter one.”
“I did not buy it, but there are magic items that are even larger. However, the item itself grows in size proportionally to the barrier.”
“Hm… So if an eight meter one was placed next to the hive, would it envelop it completely?”
“Then let us try it.”
Aira places it next to the hive, barely not touching it, and activates it. The half transparent film spreads and envelops the Killer Hive. It’s three meters tall, so it barely gets there.
“First, let’s attack when sound can’t leak outside, and see if bee reinforcements come.”
“Who will attack?”
“I was thinking about it last night, but I don’t think it should be me. My attacks can reach the inside of the hive, but not destroy it from the inside. Iris, I know it’s a little tough, but can you try that?”
‘Puru, pururu?’
“Yes, do what you want.”
‘Purururu!’
Iris sounds excited as it rolls towards the hive and stretches a tentacle that enters the hive through a hole. Its body slowly gets smaller, until it’s completely inside the Killer Hive.
“Big brother, what is Iris doing?”
“Don’t rush it, you’ll see.”
After a few minutes, the Killer Hive suddenly expands and ruptures.
Bam!!
Normally we would hear that, but the magic item erased the noise. That means we only see this dangerous situation and are fatally slow to react.
“Uoh!”
“Kyaah!”
We manage to cut down the pieces flying at us, but we’re bathed in honey and get all sticky. I just barely manage to protect Kasumi and Maki, but…
“Ueh…”
“I’m all sticky.”
“Mushy…”
Yes, Aki and Ayane are as sticky as me.
‘Pururu!!’
Iris is splashing around in a sweet flood that’s on the site of the explosion, the hive turning into smoke.
Luckily, no bees come, but we need to watch out for this explosive method… I look at the happy Iris, and think about another way to deal with this.
…Wait, isn’t someone missing?
