She faced down again at the street, and saw people jogging and strolling.
Most people there did not go to places on foot.
The high speed aerial corridors were too useful, so most people did not use the sidewalks unless they were exercising.
For people who were not from there, it was a lonely sight, but since she was riding the bus, she thought she was part of it.
Eventually, she reached the business district.
At this point, it was like entering the world of a movie about the near future.
There were pointy buildings with company logos. Humanoid golems which served for public safety and guidance, as well as smaller cleaning golems walked around.
Said golems looked pretty much like robots, not really something out of fantasy.
Also, large images were projected in the sky, many of them.
They were there for the people traversing the aerial corridors, not for the people on the sidewalk.
The shopping district had a few people on the sidewalks, but most still made use of the aerial corridors.
Walking on the sidewalk made it clear there were many people in the buildings, but not seeing people walk around was eerie.
Maybe people would not walk in the world of the future.
And as she dreamt about this nonsensical future, she entered a building.
“Good morning. Did you sleep well?”
“Hahaha, thanks to you.”
Mirai awkwardly put on a smile as a receptionist she knew greeted her.
She felt bad about sleeping until past noon in front of people working since morning.
They did not seem to care, but she rushed to an elevator because she did.
She was contracted to a company called Mr Factory. It used to be an IT company, but it expanded and grew into one of Japan’s leading companies.
Mr Factory took part in the dungeon business, and scouted people with useful skills such as Alchemy to develop products.
But these products were for regular people, not seekers. As a part of this, they contributed to Neo Utopia, including large funding.
The buses running around, the images in the sky, and all the air conditioning in Neo Utopia was done by Mr Factory.
Unfortunately, they could not contribute to the aerial corridors, but they planned to invest more and take part in a new project.
Mirai did not care about the company’s business strategies, her job there was simple.
“Did you have pleasant dreams?”
“Yes, well…”
She went up to the eleventh floor, into the department responsible for contracts with seekers.
There she was spoken to by a mild-mannered woman.
She gave a vague response, and faced a computer to type her dreams from the last night under her supervision.
Yes, Mirai’s job was to report her prophetic dreams to the company.
“Eh, you dreamed about that actor?”
“Yes, it was pretty deep.”
She dreamt about a certain famous actor being involved with multiple women. That alone was common, but it showed her this would be exposed in a magazine six months from then.
She thought this was a stupid dream, but for the company, it was valuable information.
If they involved this actor in a commercial or signed a sponsorship deal, they would incur losses. It would be terrible if they made this person the face of the company.
They managed to avoid that. Furthermore, they could sell this information elsewhere. Or leak false information to a competitor…
“Come to think of it, Kagami and the others should return today. They should be here tomorrow.”
“Really!? Ah, are they all right?”
Kagami was the leader of Mirai’s team.
She went on an exploration triggered by Mirai’s dream, and Homura went along.
“Yes, it seems so. But, it seems it was too late for the seeker fighting.”
“I see…”
That is too bad, but it seems they got what we wanted. I believe there will be a reward for that accomplishment.”
“Ooh… It was like that last time, but can I really receive that for just talking about a dream?”
“That is how valuable your prophetic dreams are.”
She dreamed about a seeker.
She could not see him clearly, maybe because the difference in power was too large, but he was fighting a queen big ant. The dream was choppy, but she saw the queen big and releasing powerful magic, and the image cut off. He was probably not saved.
When she said the time and date she saw on a smartphone, and what the place looked like, her sister and the others rushed out like they knew something.
Mr Factory wanted the queen big ant vitality nectar, but she wished he was saved.
But she was disappointed that what she saw did not change.
Leaving that aside, the woman spoke calmly.
“This is another step forward for the project. If successful, it will revolutionize the world.”
“Revolutionize?”
“Yes. I haven’t said it yet, but it will definitely cause one.”
The woman spoke gently but full of confidence.
She was not lying, the project was that great.
“That’s great.”
But Mirai was not too interested.
The woman’s eyebrows twitched at her attitude, but her expression did not change. After all, Mirai was important. She could predict the future.
Mirai was unaware, but her prophetic dreams were very valuable to Mr Factory. Much more so than the other seekers contracted to them.
If possible, they wanted to keep her at home dreaming all the time, but her sister and the others would not let that happen.
There used to be people who looked down on seekers, and joked about making them disappear, but the end of the year event Gladiators put a stop to that.
It was no good. People would not stand a chance.
Even if they used firearms, a regular person could not hurt them.
They learned in school that once, seekers almost overthrew the government, and now they realized that was true.
“That is all for today. Please come back tomorrow.”
“Yes, see you tomorrow.”
Mirai said to the woman, and went to the elevator.
That was thirty minutes of work, including chatting, and the rest of the day was free.
She thought she had to buy mana potions on the way back, as she walked through the business district.
Mirai’s life was only between her home and the business district.
The business district was filled with things from around the world, and had a lot in terms of entertainment.
She made more than enough money to buy what she wanted. Thanks to her prophetic dreams, she always lacked sleep, but her life seemed like a dream to others.
She did not know how long that would go on for, but she thought about quitting, since she had enough money for the rest of her life.
“What will I dream about today…”
She let out a big yawn, thinking it was going to be stupid anyway, and went into a discount shop.
◇ ◇ ◇
Whose dream was that?
That person was standing still. It was dark, so was it night.
In the darkness, she could see a destroyed world. Many broken buildings and fire gushing from multiple places.
She could not hear screams, so was no one there?
An intense impact ran through, and the person fell with a cute scream.
That person looked around to see what was going on, and more buildings collapsed.
Rubble fell, so the person ran as fast as she could.
Eventually she fell again, and Mirai saw someone she recognized in the reflection of glass.
Me? Is this my dream, she thought.
It was a little exciting, since that never happened before.
But what was going on? She had no plans to go to ruins like those.
There was a big shadow in the sky.
The moment she saw it, her dream self turned around and ran, not knowing what that was.
But it seemed she was horribly scared.
She was holding her short sword from when she was a seeker, which was terribly chipped and not usable.
Another impact ran, and buildings began to collapse around her.
She saw logos on them. The Mr Factory logo with M and R overlapping.
That was when she realized it was Neo Utopia.
What? What happened!?
She desperately tried to calm herself, but sadly, could not.
A streak of light ran with a roar.
An explosion happened far away, and not only its blast, but many things were blown towards her.
She could not understand. She could not see.
She knew it was because her dream self had her eyes closed.
As she slowly opened them, she saw a dragon with three pairs of wings, an angel with wings spread, and a golden light in the sky.
And that was the end of the dream.
