I’m unemployed but I’m exploring the dungeon again today – Chapter 150 – The Abyss XXI (Illusion forest VIII) – Part two

Leaving that aside, I should focus on what’s coming this time.

A wolf runs through the forest.

Its silver fur shines, and its footsteps freeze white. Its body is also big enough that I have to look up at it, and its vicious sharp claws and fangs shine with a dull light as they threaten to destroy everything.

This monster has a simpler design than most. It would be easy to call it just a big wolf, but the magic energy inside it is on another level. It might be more than me.

I could buy this being the fenrir of myth. That’s how intense it is.

It seems wary of me, because it’s keeping its distance. If it wasn’t hostile, I could just drive it away, but sadly, there’s murder in its eyes.

The fenrir’s weapons are its fangs and claws, and I’m sure it uses magic.

I use a longsword and magic, so I lose in terms of numbers, but their power can reach the fenrir’s life.

I hold up the longsword and use Limit Break.

Fuh fuh, I exhale, take a step forward to start the attack, and an ice pillar comes out of the ground.

It’s beginner magic, and I felt no flow of magic energy. It’s supposed to skewer me, but it’s way too weak.

I infuse my legs with magic energy to crush it, and approach the fenrir. I aim at its legs with my longsword, but it escapes by climbing up a tree.

It attacks with a blizzard from above, but it doesn’t phase me, and I cut through it with a projectile slash.

It dodges by running far back, taking a lot of distance from me.

I frown. Every other monster came at me to fight. That’s because they had unshakable confidence in their abilities, but what about this one?

It shouldn’t be weaker than the others. I can feel that this fenrir is on the same level.

It’s not like the kaiju, but it should be a step or two above the others in The Abyss. That’s how strong it is, but it’s not coming to attack.

And yet, the hostility is still there.

Fenrir jumps around trees, creating a white world around here.

Is it trying to make this an easier place for it to fight?

In that case, I start sending out projectile slashes to destroy everything, cutting down trees around here.

The projectile slashes cut down the trees it uses as footing, and the fenrir comes down to the ground.

I wonder what it wants to do, but then I remember it’s like that time.

Frozen trees shatter when they fall, and light reflects beautifully on the pieces.

Fenrir stands in the middle of them howling, in a completely different posture from the fleeing one it had. Its posture is now low like it’s going to pounce.

The shattered trees really are like the snow monsters I saw on that snowy mountain.

This is a problem. Not really.

After all, I can see the real fenrir. Even if the shattered ice comes on its own, even if it’s annoying, it’s not a threat.

What I have to do hasn’t changed.

I lower my posture and hold up the greatsword.

I just have to cut the fenrir’s head off. That’s all.

“Limit Break Burst.”

I step forward with swelling magic energy, and charge forward.

◇ ◇ ◇

“Kyui!??”

Hinata looks up, surprised to see the fenrir’s lifeless body.

I told Fuuma to stay in the mansion, but it watched my fight with fenrir from above.

I complain that I told it to wait in the mansion, but it neighs saying it was bored. It doesn’t regret it at all. Hinata isn’t even listening.

I sigh, and look at the fenrir.

I slashed its neck, and it’s definitely dead. There’s no sign that it will recover, so I’m glad it’s not one of those unfair types that keeps coming back.

It was tricky. I could neutralize its silver with magic energy waves, but it was so much that I couldn’t do it to all of it.

It would be easy if it was just wood, but it used grass, the ground, and even moisture in the air, and it all came at me like a tsunami. That meant I had to abandon that charge.

I didn’t expect it to control so much, it was like a natural disaster, and it came at me with even more.

It was stronger than regular snow, so the tsunami of matter reinforced with magic energy was a real threat.

It was so much that I couldn’t deal with it by using magic energy waves, and I couldn’t ward off all that matter either.

So I fought magic with magic.

I was on the ground, so I used Earth Magic to throw dirt at it.

I figured I couldn’t push through with that, so I eased up on the dirt control, and a natural change happened.

The dirt was swallowed by the tsunami, and became silver.

I didn’t expect it to be swallowed, and tried to gain back control, but once lost, it was gone. And its pace was faster.

It got me, I thought with a sour expression, and infused magic energy into the longsword.

I held it up, and yelled as I swung down to release an extra large projectile slash.

The projectile slash blew away the dirt and advanced towards the fenrir as it slashed through the silver. But of course, it dodged it.

But I was where it moved, and slashed its body.

It yelled and ran away after suffering unexpected pain.

I was going after it, but the silver got in my way.

I took advantage of that opening to use magic and approach it from the sky, but it didn’t work.

The fenrir moved away from me again, closed the wound with silver, and healed.

I tilted my head.

It seemed to have strong vitality, but no regenerative abilities. All the monsters until now either regenerated or were just fine the next moment. This fenrir seemed relatively normal.

That removed one of my causes for anxiety, and brought a question.

Why was the fenrir fighting from a distance? Its body seemed very hard when I cut it, in the top tier compared to other monsters I fought. It would take timing and a lot of magic energy to cut that head with a slash.

It wouldn’t go down to one attack.

That was my opinion of it, but what did it think?

If it was fighting from a distance because it decided it couldn’t win up close and needed to use magic from a distance, it was pretty smart.

It didn’t get overconfident, picked the best option, and tried to steadily put down its enemy.

I was at a disadvantage in one point, magic energy consumption.

Even with Magic Energy Circulation, it couldn’t keep up with the consumption of Limit Break Break, and the consumption of other magic accelerated.

Furthermore, I spent magic energy training, so I couldn’t fight with my full power for long.

Meanwhile, the fenrir used magic energy at the start, but didn’t seem to be using it to control the silver.

At that rate, I was going to run out first. If it picked this strategy based on that, it was a threat.

It was the type to run away without hesitation if things turned sour. And it was waiting for a chance to put me down for good.

I swung the longsword, swearing to kill it as I attacked.
