“Everyone, get ready to intercept! We’re stopping it here!”
Yelled a man who appeared to be the commander, and all the guards grabbed their weapons.
They held up swords, infused bracelets with magic energy, everyone got their magic items ready, before attacking the skeleton horse that approached them.
“Hmph, hmph, hmph….!”
Some swung their swords, sending a magic energy slash flying, and some shot fireballs.
But the skeleton horse easily evaded it all with light movements, and quickly reached the guards.
“Uwaah!?”
“Guh…!! You monster!!”
The earth rumbled when the skeleton horse landed near them, and the guards screamed as they were blown away by the fire it sprayed from its hooves.
The commander was angry about his subordinates being done in, and unsheathed his word and faced the monster, but the skeleton horse kicked the sword away with its rear legs.
“Hey hey, they’re not makin’ a dent in it. It’s gonna beat them!”
With its mobility, strength, finesse, and even an area of effect attack with the flames, it seemed the skeleton horse had plenty of options, and had its pick of abilities. This led to a tough fight for the guards.
Yuugo was about to jump out to save them, but his expression changed as he realized he was not wearing the bracelet on his left arm.
(Dammit! I don’t have Blaster!!)
Blaster was being worked on far away in the Luminous Academy.
Needless to say, Yuugo could not transform without it, or fight.
It was a staple for a hero. Big trouble when they came across an enemy in a situation where they could not transform. And Yuugo’s face turned pale as this scenario played out right before him.
And just as he thought to himself that he should not have left Blaster with Angel, and that it really seemed like wherever he went, trouble followed…
“Help! Someone help!”
A female voice full of grief reached his ears.
In this alarming situation, the woman pointed near where the guards fought the skeleton horse, and screamed with tears in her eyes.
“My son is still in there! He’s going to get really hurt if that goes on! Someone please help him!!”
“What!?”
Yuugo was surprised, and looked where the mother was pointing. And sure enough, he saw a boy cowering and trembling.
Yuugo understood that the boy was doing something away from his mother when this mess started, and immediately ran out towards him.
“T-that’s crazy! It’s too dangerous, Yuugo!”
He heard the voice of the owner of the farm behind him, trying to stop him, but he kept going, running at full speed towards the boy that needed help.
He knew it was dangerous, but he could not call himself a hero if he abandoned a child in a situation like this. After all, heroes were people who had to reach out to people in need of help in the first place.
Yuugo simply moved out of pure good will to save a person in need, and somehow managed to reach the boy, while a torrent of bursting magic energy agitated his body.
He grabbed the cowering boy by the shoulders, and got closer and spoke to him to reassure him.
“Are you all right!? Are you hurt anywhere!?”
The boy nodded. It seemed he could move, but the problem was moving to safety.
Going was easy, coming back was scary… He ran to the boy alone, but he would have to run back through a battlefield with him.
Having a slow boy with him multiplied the danger by a lot. He would have to be very mindful of the timing… But as Yuugo’s tension increased…
“…! Watch out!”
There were screams from the people nervously watching far away.
A fireball was heading straight towards Yuugo and the boy.
It was on a direct course, but Yuugo could still dodge it, if he was alone. But he decided in that instant he could not dodge it along with the boy, so he used himself as a shield to protect the boy from the incoming attack.
“Eh…!?”
The fireball that was supposed to hit him hit something else and disappeared.
He was surprised about being protected by something else as he tried to protect the boy, and turned his eyes towards it.
It was the skeleton horse that was fighting the guards.
Yuugo was bewildered by the sight of a monster purposefully moving to receive an attack, and the commander noticed the two people there and gave orders to his subordinates.
“Stop the attack! There are civilians who didn’t manage to get away! We need to rescue them first!”
“…Guh!!”
“Ah!? Wai, you!!”
Once it saw the guards approaching (despite having no eyes), the skeleton horse let out a small neigh and kicked the ground.
Yuugo felt something was odd, when it turned around to face him just before it did that. He called out to the skeleton horse to try to stop it, but… It ignored him, and quickly ran out.
“Did that thing protect us…?”
He watched as the monster ran, and as the guards arrived to secure him and the boy, Yuugo whispered while thinking about what just happened.
Yuugo felt it was no coincidence, and the skeleton horse moved that way on purpose, but he was prompted by the guards to move to the farm that was serving as a temporary shelter.
(What was that? Why did this happen? Why would a monster protect us?)
He had no clues about the skeleton horse’s origin, motive, or why it acted the way it did.
But… He was sure it saved them, and for a moment, looked on as the skeleton horse ran from that place.
