An exclusive mage who broke up with his alchemist childhood friend, wants to lead a slow life in a remote town – Chapter 17 – Adventurer guild – Part two – Area levels

Explaining everything would be too long, so here are the main points.

===========================

○Adventurer guild’s scale

The organization known as the adventurer guild exists in all thirteen countries of the western continents in an association.

People affiliated with the adventurer guild can also work as adventurers in another country, as long as they pass an interview.

○Objectives of the adventurer guild

The main goal of the adventurer guild is to stabilize ‘areas’. That’s a word used to indicate the danger level of a land.

The power of the saintesses to lower the danger of areas is great, but not all powerful.

There’s only one saintess in each country, so it would be impossible to have them handle everything. Saintesses collapsing due to overwork used to be a common thing too.

It’s no exaggeration to say this organization was created to lower the burden placed on them.

Countries’ armies, basically the chivalric orders, have to be careful with what they do near borders, and they’re not typically dispatched to places they would have a hard time entering, like forests and mountains.

And so, it’s also said that the adventurer guild was created to resolve things in areas where it would be hard to lead chivalric orders inside, without the saintesses having to deal with them.

They’re not that different from mercenaries, but the fact that it’s all managed by countries makes a big difference.

It used to be a civilian organization, but about fifty years ago, it was nationalized, and all sorts of rules were put in place.

This is why there are so many rules to the adventurer guild.

○Adventurer ranks

There are six ranks in the guild, E rank, D rank, C rank, B rank, A rank, and S rank, and quests can be accepted in accordance with the adventurer’s rank.

But the individual’s ‘rank’ changes where they start in the adventurer guild. For example, Mars and Lela are mid rank, so they started from D rank.

Apparently master ranks start from S rank. Not that I feel any sense of accomplishment.

○Relation with areas

The relation between adventurer ranks and areas is seen with great importance, and areas are divided into four groups.

Area Three (safe area), Area Two (controlled area), Area One (dangerous area), and Area Zero (unexplored area.)

E Rank (Area Three)

D rank (Area Two)

C rank (Area Two)

B rank (Area Two)

A rank (Area One)

S rank (Area Zero)

This is the correspondence table. But some B ranks are on par with A ranks too.

○Rank demotion

You need permission from the guild to accept quests below your rank.

Most of those requests are rejected, unless there’s an actual reason for them. But sometimes when adventurers take quests below their rank, the guild employees might suggest they be demoted.

○Rank bonus

There’s a bonus from the guild when adventurers get to B rank and above. There are rumors that they get holiday homes when they get to A rank.

○Finally

This western continent is cursed, so the areas keep going down in level if left alone, and eventually turn into Area Zeroes that are unfit for people to live.

For us, and our descendants over a hundred years from now, we adventurers band together and fight this curse!

===========================

“That’s about it.”

The employee finishes her explanation.

“Long as always. And I only understood half of it.”

“That’s just like you, Mars. What about you, Loyd?”

“Got it all.”

“That’s our Loyd.”

Once the explanation is over, the employee takes a crystal ball from a drawer and places it on the desk.

“I will measure your strength, so place your hand on the crystal ball, Mister Loyd.”

I’m not scared of her finding out I’m a master rank anymore, but that would mean I’d definitely skip grades and go straight to S rank.

And then I wouldn’t be able to accept easier quests. I technically could if I had the guild’s permission, but having to issue a request every time would be a pain.

Reaching the goal right from the start is boring. I want to start my second life from the beginning.

And so, I touch the crystal ball, but adjust the flow of my magic energy as it goes into the crystal ball.

===========

Mage – Upper mid rank

Swordsman – Upper low rank

Priest – Lower low rank

Fighter – Upper low rank

Knight – Lower low rank

Your recommended area is Area Two.

Your adventurer rank is rank D.

===========

The crystal ball shows the five main jobs and the recommended hunting ground.

Looks like I managed to falsify the values. Not bad for something off-the-cuff.

I wanted to start from rank E if possible, but if I faked it too much, I’d draw suspicion, so I went with ‘average’.

I don’t really get it, but surely upper mid rank is average.

“I see, so a mage. You’re pretty good, to be starting off from upper mid rank at your age.

You’re a prodigy, Mister Loyd.”

U-uh? That’s not the reaction I expected. Wait, does upper mid rank classify as a prodigy!?

I figured mid meant it was average…

“I should’ve just left it at low.”

“What?”

“N-nothing. Thank you for your praise. It makes all my hard work worth it.”

That was close.

I almost let the cat out of the bag.

“You want to do quests in Area Two, as the crystal ball says, correct?

Area Two’s are between B and D ranks in terms of adventurer ranks, so you should be able to work in them safely as an adventurer if you rank C as a standard.”

“So I shouldn’t go to Area One and Area Zero?”

“That is why we check with the crystal ball. There won’t be a penalty if you do, but your survival is not guaranteed.

Also, don’t even joke about going to Area Zero. It’s a super dangerous area. So much so, that even S rank adventurers often die there.”

She says with an awkward smile.

“And refrain from working at night. The level of danger increases at night, because that is when demons are active. And since magic energy is mixed, there is a higher probability of area level changes. You might think an area is Area Two during the day, but then it changes to Area One at night. There are many reported cases.

Our suggested area levels are but an index to protect adventurers, they are not an absolute. Please make sure to remember that.

You are supposed to go to Area Two, so if monsters of the next rank appear, it means you are now in an Area One, so be very cautious.”

She says as she gives me a book.

The title is ‘Monster ranking even a monkey can understand’, and there’s a drawing of a smiling adventurer on the cover that makes it look like a kids’ book.

This style reminds me of a certain kind of resource.

The first page says ‘you’ll die if you don’t pay attention while you read this’.

The mood change from the title to what’s inside is way too rough…!
