I picked up an unsold slave elf and made her my daughter – Chapter 93 – Ririi eats a berry

There’s a day every few months when parents can go to the magic school to watch a class.

How is my child in class? Is my child getting along with the others? A lot of parents have those kinds of questions in mind, and with underclassmen in particular, most parents attend.

I used to tell my parents they didn’t have to go, but both of them went every time. I remember being pretty embarrassed.

Here I am, in the classroom.

In front of me are Ririi, who looks like she’s enjoying her class, and Miss Esmeralda, looking this way like she’s annoyed. I look back at her, and she lets out an exasperated sigh before focusing on the lesson again.

Don’t mind me, just do your job.

“…”

I can use transparency magic, so it doesn’t matter to me when those days when parents can attend class are.

When I was younger, I didn’t get why people went out of their way to go watch a class being taught, but now I get why my parents shook off my objections and always made an appearance.

I just can’t help but be curious about my daughter.

If a cool-headed guy like me is like this, I’m sure my parents, who are normal people, were so curious about how I was doing that it kept them up at night. I’m sure they would’ve snuck into the classroom like me if they could use transparency magic.

Miss Esmeralda gives me another sharp glare, and then shakes her head like she’s given up and faces the students again. That makes me move my eyes over to Ririi, and I see the slime stretching out of her desk.

She notices it too, so she takes out a berry from her pocket and feeds it to the slime. It looks like she’s doing a good job looking after it.

…But don’t eat one too. That can’t be good. See? I told you. The bitterness is making her dizzy.

“Ahem… Well then, I’m sure you’re all at the point where you want to start using magic.”

“!?”

Her words shake the classroom. I hear voices all over that sound celebratory, and the classroom that was silent just a second ago is now filled with the enthusiasm of a festival.

Ririi has her hands in the air and looks happy too, but the student next to her is the only one that looks calm. That’s Medici’s daughter, Lain.

“Good grief… Why all the fuss?”

Lain looks exasperated by this out of control classroom. Usually, kids her age go crazy over magic, but judging by her reaction, she’s already been using magic.

I use magic energy detection, and that suspicion turns into a certainty. The magic energy flowing inside her body already carries the characteristics of that of a sorcerer. She probably uses magic daily.

She’s from one of the leading families of the capital, so it makes sense that her education is first rate too. I need to learn from their example and train Ririi vigorously.

“I guess I don’t need to ask any more. Follow me. You’re now going to become sorcerers.”

Miss Esmeralda says as she leaves the classroom, and the students frantically follow her. I wait for them to go, and watch from the back.

It goes without saying that magic carries with it some danger. Even magic fired by an underclassman could kill someone in the right circumstances.

That’s why practicing magic in the magic school has to be done in the appropriate location, and using magic is generally prohibited everywhere else.

These places where students can use magic are called ‘training rooms’, and we’re in the twenty-seventh one, surrounding a large red murky stone. This stone is about as big as an adult, and feels like it was cut straight out of a wall of rock… Why didn’t people process it and give it a nicer shape? Because of the peculiar nature of this stone.

“This is called coral crystal, and… Well, it’s faster to show it rather than explain it.”

Miss Esmeralda stands next to the stone, and moves her hand in the air in a wave like motion. A few magic circles appear, following her hand, and small lightning attacks come out from them, joining together to create a big lightning attack… Which then strikes the coral crystal.

Boom. A loud explosive sound and an impact run through the training room.

“Ah!”

The kids all sound surprised, and they probably expect the stone to be destroyed, but a different reality awaits them.

“Eh? Why!?”

“Where did the magic go?”

“That stone’s awesome!”

The students all start making a fuss about the stone, that’s standing there like nothing happened. Miss Esmeralda looks pretty pleased with that.

The overreactions of kids must feel fresh to her, as opposed to people like the sour-faced Sieglinde, and me, who never took the lessons seriously. That’s not cute at all.

“Hihi, this is what coral crystal is all about. It can’t be broken by magic. That means you can use it to practice your magic all you want.”

Her explanation isn’t a hundred percent correct.

Coral crystal has very high resistance against magic, but it can be broken with magic. I actually tried it once, and had to pay almost ten million zeni because of it.
