(Finally. The time is finally here…!)
While everyone’s eyes were on the coral crystal, Lain chuckled to herself in a corner of the training room.
(Everyone is going to be blown away by my brilliance…!)
Lain endured boring lessons even though she already had a grasp on the basics of magic, for this moment, when she would be able to show off her power. Most students were still unable to draw a satisfactory magic circle, so it should be crystal clear how brilliant she was, considering she could already use magic of all basic elements.
She could not wait for the chance to show off her magic.
And… Things went mostly according to her predictions.
“Teyah! Hn… It’s not coming out.”
“How do you bring out a magic circle?”
There were voices all around of students struggling to bring out their magic. Each of them felt like they were scratching an itch in Lain’s heart. What kind of jealous looks would she get once she beautifully displayed her magic? Her body trembled to the core when she imagined it.
She made her way through the crowd in front of her, unable to hold back any longer, and stood in front of the crystal.
Even this magnificent giant crystal that felt like a breath of nature itself was more like a jewel that served to make Lain look good.
“…Ahh…”
Lain was holding a high class staff made of the S rank item ‘lightning beast silver fang’s skull’.
She moved slower than when she practiced at home, and put out her hand in a very purposeful way. Her movements brimming with confidence made everyone’s eyes naturally shift over to her. Even Weiss, who only had eyes for his dear daughter, moved them away from her for a second.
(…All right.)
She pointed the staff at the crystal… And a magic circle appeared. It was small, but it included a ‘shape’ modification, something they had not learned in class yet. She had recently spent a sleepless night practicing a modification to transform lightning into the shape of a spear.
Esmeralda’s eyes opened a little wider once she realized it, as not a lot of first-year students could do such a thing so early.
(Ah… How good it feels!)
There were suddenly voices all around her, mostly praising her, making Lain feel an indescribable feeling of joy.
She infused the magic circle with magic energy, and it started to faintly glow, before eventually a small spear appeared. The students were very excited when they saw this lightning spear.
“Ooh!”
“Cool!”
(Fufun, it looks like you finally understand my true power…!)
Lain felt satisfied as she heard various shrill voices, and fired the spear against the crystal, which made a thunderous roar as it rushed towards the crystal.
Would it actually break it? That thought crossed her mind, but just as Esmeralda explained earlier, the lightning spear vanished the moment it touched the crystal.
Of course it would not be so easy, Lain thought to herself.
And as she looked on at the crystal with a satisfied look on her face, Esmeralda spoke to her.
“That was great, Lain. You learned how to change its shape by yourself?”
“Yes, Miss Esmeralda. I’ve been doing that for a while now.”
She only learned how to change the shape of magic the previous night, and she could only change it into a spear, but she put on airs without even thinking.
“I see. That’s brilliant.”
“Thank you Miss Esmeralda.”
Hearing Esmeralda, a sorcerer that represented the capital itself call her brilliant, made Lain feel fulfilled, as she stepped away from the crystal.

(Ririh can’t get close…)
Ririi wanted to use magic right away, but she was smaller than the others, and was having trouble getting near the crystal. Even when it seemed she was almost there, someone would push her back, and everyone’s back was in the way. She had no idea how to approach this.
In the end, her turn came after everyone else had a try. For better or worse, that drew attention to her.
(It’s finally Ririh’s turn…!)
She approached the crystal with small steps, and touched it with her hand. There was no particular reason for it, she just wanted to touch it because she thought it was pretty.
After having her fill of touching it, she walked back, turned around to face it again, and raised her staff against it.
“That staff’s so pretty…!”
“Awesome…”
There was no other staff like hers, as it was made of the SSS material ‘crystal dragon horn’. It was a talking point among the students ever since she used it during class.
Ririi herself was proud of it too, because she understood that her staff was something incredible, and she was thankful to Weiss for getting it for her.
(All right. Go for it Ririh. Don’t hold back.)
Weiss watched his daughter’s hour of triumph from a corner of the room. His fists were clenched tightly, and his expression seemed nervous for once. He felt more tense than when he assassinated people for his job.
“Hnhn… Itchy itchy…”
Ririi closed her eyes, and started moving her staff a little. She pictured in her head the ‘itchy’ flowing through her body concentrating in the tip of her fingers.
(…All right, feels good.)
Maybe it was her talent, or just a trait of high elves, but the magic energy concentrated in her staff exactly as she pictured it. A red magic circle appeared, and Weiss did a little triumphant pose.
It was significantly larger than Lain’s magic circle, and she was the one who did best in this class.
(It’s… Feeling good…)
She was focusing as hard as she could. Her eyes were closed, so she could not actually see if a magic circle appeared, but strangely enough, she was sure it worked.
She could picture the magic energy in her staff flowing onto the magic circle and everything leading up to the magic being fired perfectly. It could even destroy the magic crystal.
She was thinking the exact same thing Lain was thinking earlier.
Ririi concentrated all the ‘itchy’ in her body on the staff, opened her eyes, and fired.
“…Tah!!!!”
