I’m going with a big ship big gun doctrine! Take aim at a slow life! ~I was thrown out into space, but I took over a spaceship by coincidence, so I’ll work as a mercenary while playing with the dirt.~ – Chapter 38 – A girl called Iris, and the update to the shield generator

“I think we should break some of the living room to have space for more hydroponic planters, for entertainment sake.”

Says Iris as we have breakfast, the morning after I bought her.

“Another one out of nowhere.”

“But I really was thinking about getting more.”

“Getting lots of sweet things~?”

“But why the living room and not the cargo bay?”

Yeah, and what does she mean by entertainment?

“The purpose isn’t mass production, it’s admiration. And eating is also entertainment.”

As she says that, images of plants we should plant appear on the living room’s screen, along with information about them.

We’re keeping strawberries, and it’s showing pineapples and bananas.

“Don’t bananas and pineapples grow on trees?”

“No, they are both herbs that can be harvested in three months. The plan is to use two meter breeds for both.”

The image then cuts to bananas that are about half the size of the ones I’d buy in a supermarket. As for pineapples, there are stems stretching out from the middle of herbs, with very strange fruit at the end.

It’s like a dandelion, like there’s a pineapple at the end of a dandelion. Space age pineapples are weird, I’m surprised they don’t break.

Dandelions… Could we use artificial flowers as decoration? It’s like a pillow monster attacked this place, but maybe it’d be nice to have flowers.

“Got it, give me the budget… Oh, it’s already there.”

“As for the cargo bay, I recommend an hydroponic plant.”

“No, I’m not doing that yet.”

“Understood. I will e-mail it to everyone.”

I put ham on pancakes made with the food printer, and Iris shows something else on the monitor.

“Here is the estimate for the new shield generator. The outer shell and internal wiring are mostly complete, so materials included, it should cost two million puni.”

“Iris, this is kind of a heavy topic for breakfast…”

“Is it?”

“More like it’s not even enterin’ my head…”

“I know right~? I’d rather talk after I get some food in me and feel all refreshed~.”

“I think it would be best after eating and doing some exercise. My head works better after sweating a little.”

Iris says she understands, and changes what’s on the monitor.

“Then, this is what I picked up from the quests offered by the Mercenary Guild…”

“Iris, stop, stop.”

“What?”

“We’re eating~.”

“I understand, but I figured we could have a meeting.”

“Ah… I see, what should we do…”

Everyone’s troubled, as we peck at stuff like the ham.

“Iris, it would be best to not have meetings during breakfast.”

Says Suzuri.

“Hm, hm? But everyone was on board with talking about hydroponics.”

“Ah, I see. That was part of the meeting…”

I get it. That’s why she started a morning meeting instead of a lunch meeting.

“I just thought you were chatting.”

“Oh, is that so? Come to think of it, you did stop the conversation about the plant in the cargo bay.”

“Yes yes. I thought it was just morning chatter.”

“Yes~. You don’t have to try so hard, Iris~. It’s morning~.”

“This is difficult…”

Iris paints quite the picture, tilting her head in her tailcoat butler cosplay that makes her look like a beautiful girl dressed like a man…

“I’ll listen to it at this time if it’s urgent, but if you have something to report, we tend to do it before or after lunch.”

“Yes yes~. We always have breakfast, rest a little, do some exercise~… And we talk about what we’re doing in the afternoon and going forward while eating lunch~.”

“Very well. Is there anything else?”

“Not really… Ah! Please keep an eye on Genma when he exercises, to train him properly!”

“That might be a good idea. She might be a bit rough, but can you put together a set for him?”

“Leave it to me, I will look into it.”

“Please be gentle…”

An hour after breakfast, I discover she’s not gentle at all, and I enjoy the cold and clean cargo bay floor as I lie here not moving a muscle.

“Master really is a weak being. Should I propose to the Alliance to make you an engendered species?”

“You should not force him to exercise the same as I… In the past three years, I have been training any time I had the opportunity…”

“Whatever, can you just get the lil’ killers off me…?”

I’m now lying with only my toes and forearms touching the floor. A plank. But on top of having something heavy on top of me, this is too long. Five minutes isn’t normal.

It’s a little funny feeling the disk drones roll on top of me, but not three.

“Iris, humans’ muscles hurt when you suddenly make ’em do high-intensity exercise…”

“But they won’t achieve their desired muscle otherwise.”

“It is scary how she does not back down one bit…”

“Improving darling’s specs is a pressing issue~.”

Well, I do think I’m still pretty weak.

“If someone is this weak, maybe genetic modding via implants should be an option… In fact, why don’t you have them?”

“Because putting machines in my body is scary?”

“This is why it has been put on hold.”

“Eyes, ears, kidneys, and lungs are in pairs, so you could swap one of them.”

“Organs aren’t something you can just take out because there’s spares…”

“I think they are, because you have spares.”

“Actually, as I will explain later, the shield generator will take some time to be ready, so we could implant something like a thought enhancing device.”

Well, I do have a translation implant already.

After exercising and having a quick shower, I rest in the living room. This is the routine I settled on for days off. I nap for about half an hour. This isn’t that different from the construction days in Japan, so it’s pretty familiar to me.

Right here in the living room, a pillow vs couch battle has begun, and I’m lying on the couch with Saratha’s tail serving as my pillow. I guess it’s okay if I don’t pet it.

“Didn’t we talk about the shield generator this morning?”

“Hn~? Yes yes, Iris gave me documents and I was reading them~.”

“Are you going for it? It’s gonna cost two million and take about three days. Apparently she contacted Sumire to manufacture the outer shell and stuff.”

“The problem is if there’s an increase in power consumption. That means we have to get more puny for when we’re in combat.”

“We can set it up, but… Should we perhaps keep the shield generator in storage?”

That’s a military grade shield generator, so if we sell it, who knows when we can get another one if we need it.

“It’s a military shield, so it should be worth about three million in the Akul second hand market. But I recommend keeping it in the cargo bay for effective use, and storing it with a protective treatment.”

“Yes~. If we take care of it, it can still be used~.”

“So I guess it’s pretty much confirmed that we’re havin’ that generator made?”

Asks Saratha, and I nod. I want to improve equipment if I can, and living expenses shouldn’t be a problem.

“Then next should be the plan to strengthen Genma.”

Says Suzuri.

Note: Genma never saw pineapples on Earth.
