“Gaius, you can say no if you want, but can I ask you something?”
After talking to Miss Lan, I go talk to Gaius, hoping to catch him alone.
Gaius has been patrolling the country in his wolf form. Mister Oshashio told me he said that’s all he can do. I don’t think that’s true at all.
Gaius is a beast person, and he can turn into a wolf, so he’d be strong in a fight even among the people of this country. But Gaius isn’t strong because he’s a knight of the miko, it’s because he keeps trying hard to be able to protect everyone.
I think he’d be strong even without my influence, even if he didn’t meet me. I think he’s great. Or maybe it’s me reaching conclusions alone.
“Gau? (Ask?)”
Gaius seems puzzled.
“Yes. Hum, so this place is turning into a country. There’s a castle, a name… And I think we’re going to have lots more people.”
“Gaugau. (True.)”
“So, I was thinking it’d be best if you were the king.”
“Gau? (Eh?)”
Gaius looks confused, like he doesn’t understand what I mean.
He turns back into his beast person form, like he wants to hear what I’m saying properly.
“King?”
“Yes. Countries have kings, right? I think you’d definitely be a good king. I’d be happy if you were on top and did your best as king. Then we could keep going without worrying.”
That’s how I really feel. Gaius would be a wonderful king.
Gaius opens his mouth, but I speak first.
“But I’m not trying to force you, I’m just thinking that’d be good. Also, Miss Lan said I could be royalty too, because it all started with us. I think it’d be wonderful if I was at the top with you.”
I say, and smile.
Miss Lan said all that stuff about being a queen and marrying Gaius… But I’m leaving that for another day, when that really becomes a problem.
I don’t know a lot about that sort of thing, but I think if that ever becomes a problem, we can just face it and talk about it.
More importantly, I want to see if he wants to be king together.
“With you…”
“Yes. I wouldn’t even think of being a king and standing above everyone else alone. But together, I feel like we can do it. It’s thanks to you that I became able to follow my will and do stuff I want. I used to not think about anything, so I think you’re great because it’s thanks to you that I’ve come this far.”
Gaius is really special to me. He’s a lot greater than he thinks. That’s why I think he should be king.
“I think you’d be a wonderful king, and take the country in a good direction. I’m sure with you, we can make our vow come true here.”
Those expectations might be heavy for Gaius. I’m just creating them all on my own, but… I think Gaius is great.
If he doesn’t accept, I’ll have to talk to Miss Lan and the others again. But once I thought of Gaius as king, that’s all I can think of.
“How about we become king together? It would help Miss Lan and the others too, so I’m sure it’d be good for the country. If we both work hard, I’m sure it will become a nice place. There’s a lot I still have to work on, but I’m sure we can do anything with the others.”
Gaius and I. It would be tough with just the two of us, but we’re not alone, we have lots of people. This country is full of people who will help us.
“…Yes. Let’s become king together.”
Gaius nods.
