Wea is a spirit, but what can be done for her to keep living here after I’m dead?
The monsters contracted to me might not be seen by other people as citizens of this country, in the strictest sense of the word. A good number of the people that are new here keep their distance from them and me.
So what should I do?
“Lerunda.”
Then Miss Lan calls out to me.
“Are you floating like that to sunbathe?”
Yes, I’m using my magic to float. I can create wings and fly, but right now, I’m just floating.
I try to do something while I’m thinking, so I thought I’d do this. Even just floating is magic practice.
And when I float near the spirit tree, the spirits hover around me, and it’s fun.
Being king means I shouldn’t act improperly in front of people. I’ve been using magic and taking it easy in the castle’s garden after I was told that… Not many people come here.
Also, I’m thirteen. I’m getting closer to the age where I can be called an adult. And since I became king, I need to start feeling responsible.
“I was just thinking.”
“I see. You can tell me if something is troubling you. I don’t know if I can think of a solution right away, but I can help.”
“Thanks, Miss Lan. Hum, The spirits and monsters contracted to me will live on after I’m dead. I was wondering what I could do for them. Especially Wea… She lost the person she was contracted to once before. I told her I’d be happy if she watched over what I left behind after I’m gone, but I started thinking if I could do something for her, and it got all complicated in my head.”
I don’t think I’m going to reach a solution.
I’m not leaving this behind on purpose anyway… I think Wea and the others will just naturally watch over it.
But what should I do to make sure they have the easiest time with it?
“I see. It’s complicated, because different species have different lifespans. It’s hard to process that ones who live long lives will be here long after we are gone. For us, this life is limited, but all we can do is what is within our grasp.”
“Yes. In the end, we don’t know what things will be like after we’re dead. I just wish I could do something and know it’d be the best thing to do.”
“Yes. For us, it’s enough if we are satisfied. In the end, no one knows what things will be like after we are gone, or what the people we left behind will feel about what we did.”
As I listen to her, I think she’s right.
I don’t know about people from the past, long before I was born. All I know is what’s in stuff like books. And there aren’t that many records to begin with.
I don’t know what people thought in the past, or what they did.
In the end, only they knew.
People who will come after me can only imagine it was like this or that.
Yes, then I should just do what I think is right.
Talking with Miss Lan leads me to think I don’t need to think about this stuff that deeply. I just need to be a good contractor to Wea and the others.
“Ah, yes. Lerunda, I need to talk to you about something.”
“Yes?”
That was why she came to me. I land while wondering what it is, because I was still floating with magic.
It sounds serious, so I should listen properly.
“Did you hear that Lunid might have a new king?”
“Yes, from Mister Nirushi.”
I answer, and remember him saying that. It was a while back.
“They do have a new king.”
I’m surprised. I heard that might happen, but someone new did become king.
Miss Lan looks serious, so is this going to have an impact in our lives?
