The frontier alchemist ~ I can’t go back to that job after you made my budget zero – Chapter 227 – Princess Lily’s sword!!

I sigh in the room supplied to me.

I’m in a room in a mansion in Princess Lily’s territory in Sototo.

They must have been notified in advance that we would be coming. The tremors mean this is a time of emergency, so my room is somewhat simple, but I can still say we received a more than warm welcome.

I ate a few tasty dishes of Sototo whose names I don’t know. A lot of them were sort of white and lightly seasoned, but not bad. Judging by Taula’s reaction, they’re high class stuff.

I guess that’s to be expected from a mansion owned by royalty.

I sigh again and decide to settle the work in front of me.

To be more specific, it’s a sword, and it goes without saying that it’s Princess Lily’s. She pushed it onto me after we were done eating.

Apparently she has a spare here, and she told me to customize it when I have the time, but there’s no doubt that I’ll be busy again starting tomorrow.

And I don’t really feel right keeping a sword that belongs to royalty for very long.

I want to finish it tonight if I can.

I don’t really feel like doing this, but cutting corners and not doing a good job goes against what I believe in, so how should I transmute it?

“Now that I think about it, people always bring me problems for me to solve. I don’t think I’ve ever been given such a vague request.”

I asked Princess Lily what I should do with the sword when she handed it to me, and she gave me the very inconvenient request to make it special and cool.

Thinking about this brings about a third sigh.

“Cool… If I were to endow it with a curse, there would have to be the appropriate compensation. Hm… Can I make the effect on the weak side, and put a system in place to shoulder the compensation? That said, if I work on the sword itself, I can’t really adjust its balance as an actual weapon…”

I keep thinking while looking at my tools, transmutation materials, and the new monster parts I acquired.

“I know. If I attach a replaceable magic crystal to a belt through a magic crest… I can make the belt with monster materials that were left over from when I made Seilook’s saddles.”

I start writing an idea on a piece of paper.

“The difference between this and magic potions… I see, using curses means I have to use a crest of my blood and curses on the belt…! And then this and…”

The sound of a pen vigorously scribbling on a piece of paper echoes through the quiet night.

“As for effects, the most innocuous one would be the pale light that started emanating from Taula’s sword as a side effect. I could make the same for this one. But that, I think… Taula said she could feel Lady Sela’s presence from it. I have to look into that first… All right. I’ll try to replicate it with the twin horntail knife!”

I take out my trusty knife, and test it to see if I can replicate that effect with curses and leftover bloody potion.

“It feels similar, but there is clearly less light. Other than that, I don’t really feel anything. It doesn’t sound too logical, but I think the key is the feelings and thoughts projected into it. Curses are techniques that interact with people’s feelings after all.”

I whisper while holding up the twin horntail knife that’s shining faintly with a pale color.

As a test, I touch the blade while thinking back to my work with the alchemist association.

“It feels like the light has gotten a bit stronger…”

And then, before I know it, the light is back to normal.

And I start feeling like what happened back then doesn’t really matter now.

“Does it feed on negative emotions? I guess I really need to make a magic crystal its compensation.”

I place my hand on my face.

“But it doesn’t really feel like it’s cursed. If anything, it kind of feels purified. There’s a sort of sanctity to its appearance too. All right, I’m just going to call this light ‘purifying light’ for now. Princess Lily should be happy with that.”

I mostly finish my preparations, and use transmutation and curses at the same time to perform the necessary steps to envelop Princess Lily’s sword with this purifying light.

Scrolls flutter about, the belt is processed, and with a right hand dipped in bloody potion, I draw magic crests and magic circuits on the sword and belt.

I use the materials available to me without stint, and it’s all finished pretty quickly.

“It took less time than I expected. Looks like I’ll be able to sleep well tonight.”

I say while stretching and feeling satisfied with a job well done.

But there’s something I don’t notice.

What was born out of Princess Lily’s self-indulgence and my unwillingness to skimp out on anything related to alchemy, is something outside of the ‘categories’ of the ‘server’ system that rules over this world.

But what might that lead to?
