Walking in another world – Chapter 286 – Golem core

After leaving Flamen, and on the way to Nahal, I make a few things while we rest.

First, golem cores, made with minotaur magic stones, to put them in golems and make them move with Life Granting.

The more I use them, the more they accumulate experience and learn. Kind of like a self-learning AI?

But if they break, everything they learned goes to waste. The cores are covered and reinforced with mithril, because mithril is light.

Another advantage is that I don’t have to be the one infusing them with magic energy. This is something that came to be as the Life Granting skill leveled up.

However, the only people who can give the golems orders are the ones whose magic energy is registered, meaning me and the other five members of my party.

I could register more users, but not at the current skill level. I have to continue leveling it up.

…I think these cores turned out to be a little too needlessly high-performance, but that’s because I combined three minotaur magic stones to make each one.

I could make more if I had more magic stones, but I don’t have any more magic stones from high ranking monsters.

If I use low ranking magic stones, they still have some ability to learn, but as soon as I give them a somewhat complex order, they stop.

They’re also not efficient when it comes to fuel, and need a lot of magic energy to operate for a long time.

“What are you going to make next?”

Asks Rurika as I work with Mia and Chris.

I have two high-performance cores now, so I’m thinking I want to make a golem shaped like a human, and one shaped like an animal.

I ask Mia and Chris for advice, and we settle on working on monster bones using alchemy to create a skeletal structure.

The cores are now on special dolls made by Mia so they can keep learning, but they won’t be able to fight in those.

When I tell her this, she says ‘just take it easy’ and goes back to keeping watch.

She’s right, I can easily get engrossed in this sort of thing and end up feeling tired when we’re supposed to rest.

I think this is a good stopping point. Could it be that that’s actually why Rurika came here in the first place?

“How about we end it here today and continue next time?”

When I say that, they look disappointed.

I get it. When you’re engrossed in something, you just want to keep going. But if we overdo it, we’re going to feel it later.

If all goes well, it should still take us about eight days to reach Nahal.

Following the main road means it’s relatively safe, but we still have to stray away from it to camp.

The pavement wouldn’t allow people traveling by wagon to go too far away, but in main roads with a lot of traffic, they have spaces specifically made to park wagons.

The downside is that while that’s convenient for them, it’s also a place that’s easy to attack. In these cases, people using wagons tend to call out to each other and hunker down so they can defend themselves even if there’s an attack.

If they know each other, of course. Apparently they drive away strangers because there’s no guarantee that they won’t do something bad. But sometimes they also accept them if they’re in a large group.

“I guess not many people go on foot.”

“Sora, face reality. It’s not ‘not many’! It’s just us.”

Yes, Rurika’s right. To be precise, it feels like no one’s traveling by wagon either.

We left Flamen five days ago, but we’ve only passed by three wagons, and only one has overtaken us from the other side.

Although it’s nice that there isn’t anyone around, because it means I get to work on the golems when we rest.

Also, while we take breaks, someone infuses the cores with magic energy to get them moving.

Hikari sets up targets and has them attack them. The human shaped one is given a thinly shaved piece of wood, while the animal one just tackles.

The piece of wood breaks and the animal golem makes a pyon sound as it bounces back, but I’m sure that’s because of the materials their bodies are made of.

Still, Hikari has fun giving them orders and seeing them act them out.

Sera keeps peeking at it too. I think she also wants to infuse them with magic energy, but when she tried it before, they only moved a little before they stopped.

She was probably looking forward to it too, because I still remember how dejected she looked.

Is this going to be my next goal with them? Letting them work for longer with low magic energy?

It would be best if I could make something that could refine magic energy to a certain extent, but such a thing doesn’t exist yet.

What about something similar to solar energy in that other world? Or…

It feels like the more skills I get, the more I want to do. And even though I’m not doing something dangerous like exploring a dungeon, I feel like I’m even busier than I was back then.

“You look like you’re having fun, Sora.”

“Yes, he looks all lively.”

Say Chris and Mia.

I guess it is fun to have more things to do. And it’s fulfilling to see them take shape with my own eyes.

And when the golems are done, I can see them being useful for all sorts of things.
