Walking in another world – Chapter 444 – Ulterior motives

“So we’re going in this?”

Kotori asks as she looks at a wagon with an excited expression.

Yes, the wagons Dan got us are more luxurious than regular ones. They have higher performance and speed, and less of an impact on the passengers… Yes.

That’s just what I heard from Leila and her party though.

But Kotori isn’t excited about it being fancy, it’s because she gets to ride in a wagon from this point forward.

She’s used to riding in fancy wagons anyway.

…Being treated as heroes probably meant they were handled with care. Especially considering those people in Elesya were planning to work them to death.

But that sort of thing comes with all sorts of harmful effects. That’s why Argo’s party is with them, and acting as educators of sorts. There are some things they can’t teach though, like cooking, cooking, and cooking.

Argo’s party cooks for themselves, but they feel like while they’re on the move, they only need to take in nutrients, and don’t prioritize how it tastes.

They’re like people who think preserved foods are enough.

Of course, they’ll eat nice things if they can, but they differentiate between eating in towns, and outside.

But I was also told that at the bottom of all this, the reason is that no one in their party can cook.

Guilford can sort of cook, but it’s just roasting, or putting meat and vegetables in water and boiling them. He mostly uses pepper as seasoning, and only sprinkles it on the meat.

“You can cook, right!? Can you teach me lots about it while we travel!?”

Asks Kotori.

Kaede and Miharu look embarrassed, but it’s not like girls have to know how to cook.

I feel like in this world it’s more common for men to know how to cook. That’s the impression I get from inns and stalls. Of course, that depends on the type of food too.

For example, it’s mostly men selling meat in stalls, but in places that sell stuff like vegetable soup and sweets, it’s mostly women.

But Rurika and the others say it’s rare for male adventurers to know how to cook. In my case, I have a skill, which is basically cheating in a way.

But Kotori is looking at me with her eyes full of expectation, so I decide to listen to her request. It’s fine, I just have to teach her while I cook.

Then, it’s finally time to go, but Dan shows up.

We’re all ready to go, and I’m just about to enter the wagon, but our eyes meet, and he signals with his hand for me to come to him.

“Did you come all the way here to say goodbye?”

I ask Dan, whose breath is ragged.

And just as I think to myself that if that was the case, he should’ve called Mia and not me, he hands me something

I can immediately tell it’s a letter.

“Make sure you hand this to my daughter… To Yor!”

His face is really serious.

Then he leans forward, with his eyes a little bloodshot.

“And… Tell her to make sure to write back! Absolutely sure!!”

I look at the letter, and then back at Dan.

Come to think of it, I get the feeling that I heard Yor got letters pretty often, but didn’t write back. Although she did write back to her mother and Yuri.

I also think I heard her say that he sends letters so often, that it became a pain.

…Could this be the reason why he got us the wagons?

I guess it would only make sense to heed his request, since he got us the wagons and everything.

“Hey, did you…”

“Thank you! I’m busy, so I have to go back right away!”

The moment I open my mouth to ask, he speaks fast and leaves like he’s running away.

I put the letter in the Item Box. We’re going to Majolica anyway, and we’re going to meet Yor there, so it’s not like I’ll have any trouble delivering it.

I’m not too confident that I can make her write back though, but I’ll still ask.

“What did he want?”

Asks Naoto, who is already in the wagon.

Since we have two wagons, we’re separated by gender.

I tell him what Dan asked me, because he didn’t ask me to keep it a secret or anything.

Naoto and the others tilt their heads. Well, it’s not like we can understand how he feels, at this point in our lives.

But Argo…

“I kind of get it…”

He says, looking into the distance.

His eyes look kind of dead, and my instincts tell me not to ask anything.

Naoto, Guilford, and the others also try to take distance, despite being inside a wagon with nowhere to go.

And so, we change the subject by talking about what we’re going to eat while camping.

When I first teamed up with Rurika and Chris, Rurika told me that being able to cook is a big plus in a guy. And when I say that, Shun asks me to teach him.

Guilford also seems interested.

And then, we leave the Holy City of Messer towards Loyet.

I wonder if he can get a ‘teaching’ skill 🤔
