The next morning, we take care of things at the northern gate of the border city, and get ready to leave.
“Lak is pretty far. Are you walking there?”
Asks a concerned guard. Suffice to say, his eyes are on Elsa and Alto.
“We couldn’t get a wagon, and a magic beast wagon wouldn’t…”
I try to be evasive, and he gets it.
“He’s ridden on a magic beast wagon for sure.”
Says Rurika, with full confidence.
“I’ll bring out the wagon once we’re far enough.”
We’re also leaving a little late so we can avoid the morning rush and the eyes that come with it.
Just leaving on foot and then being seen in a wagon would be enough to confuse people.
I want to avoid unnecessary hassle, but with Siphon and the others here, I’m sure it would work out. Although I’d just be relying on them.
After thirty minutes of walking, I get the wagon out of the Item Box.
“I’m surprised something that big fit in there.”
Siphon is surprised, but I have plenty of room left.
Then I take the golem out, attach it to the wagon, sit on the driver’s seat with Hikari, and Orga and Jin sit somewhere they can keep an eye behind us.
“Tell me if it’s not comfortable. I’ll… Modify it if I can.”
Even I have my limits.
I take the reins, and give instructions to the golem, which begins to walk slowly.
I’m holding back at first, slower than a person running, but faster than walking.
“How does it feel?”
“No problem.”
Hikari’s response makes me breathe a sigh of relief.
I put this together pretty quickly, so…
“Can’t it go faster?”
Adds Hikari.
“I’m going at this speed while we see how it does at first.”
This is a little slower than the wagon we were on before, so after seeing how it does for about an hour, and that Elsa and Alto seem to be doing fine, I start to gradually speed up.
But the golem spends some magic energy every time it accelerates, so I have to replenish it.
After another hour, it’s lunch time.
Elsa and Mia make a simple soup, which we eat with things Hikari and the others bought at stalls yesterday.
“Master, I recommend this.”
Says Hikari, and Alto nods too, so I do as she says.
It’s a wolf meat skewer, but rather than sauce, it’s mostly seasoned with salt and pepper. The slight hot taste works.
“Are you tired, Elsa and Alto?”
It’s been almost twenty days since we left Majolica. I figured traveling might be tough on them, since they’re not used to it, but they still look fine.
But we still take a break after lunch before continuing, because at this rate, we’d catch up to the wagons that left this morning.
The main roads of the Beast Kingdom are wider than in other places, so we could overtake them easily, but I don’t know how they would react if they realized this wagon is pulled by a golem.
Should I use Concealment to eliminate its presence?
I think about this as we keep moving, and use Concealment as a way to increase its proficiency too.
When the sun starts to go down, the presences of the wagons in front of us split to the left and right, probably to get ready to camp before it gets dark.
“Master, I can see wagons.”
I can also see a few parked wagons, and keep going while keeping an eye on them.
Some people look our way, but they don’t really react.
“Should we get ready to camp too?”
I check Map, and see we’re far enough away. We just have to leave before them tomorrow.
We could keep running throughout the night if we were in a hurry, but at this pace, I don’t think we need it.
I use Earth Magic to level the ground, and make a cooking area as well as a sleeping area.
Chris says we don’t have to worry about rain, so we aren’t pitching tents.
The weather is nice, so spreading something on the ground and sleeping covered in a robe is enough.
We have soup again for dinner, along with meat skewers and fried food, along with bread I stored in the Item Box.
Once we’re done, even though it’s a little early, we go to sleep, except for the ones keeping watch.
I cast a shield on the wagon and another surrounding the sleeping area just in case, and have the golem be alert.
I fall asleep thinking next time I could make something like a caravan, so we could sleep inside.
I could also make a house with magic, but that would stand out way too much…
