The first class of the first year was filled with enthusiasm.
“Wow! It like came out of my hand all buwah!”
“Me too me too! So this is magic!”
“Now I’m a sorcerer too…!”
It usually took about a week for everyone in a class to be able to release magic energy. Teaching someone how to feel magic energy was not difficult, but it took time, because everyone’s senses were different.
However, Esmeralda managed to get the whole class to release magic energy in under an hour. There was a reason people called her the most talented woman in the capital.
“Hihi, settle down. You have only taken your first step into becoming sorcerers. And… Don’t go around firing magic energy recklessly. Worst case scenario, it will lead to death. Hihi…”
“!?”
The entire class immediately quieted down, as Esmeralda uttered the word death perfectly casually. Kids who were getting carried away and showering each other with their magic energy trembled, and ran to her.
“Miss Esmeralda, I let out a lot…!”
“M-me too…! What do I do!?”
In the once again noisy classroom, Ririi nodded deeply behind her desk. She remembered that when she went out for a picnic in the forest near the capital, she collapsed due to using too much magic energy. To Weiss that was an adventure for Ririi to practice her magic energy, but in her mind it was a picnic.
After that, Ririi swore to herself that she wouldn’t worry her father.
“Hihi, don’t worry. You’re not going to die from just that. But… Naughty kids that go around using magic when I’m not looking might end up suddenly falling and not getting up again.”
“Eeek…!!”
“…!? Ririh doesn’t wanna die…!”
This was just something Esmeralda always said, to make sure kids that don’t have good senses yet didn’t hurt someone, but the children took her words very seriously, and trembled.
Some, like Ririi, who actually passed out once, had tears in their eyes. Lain was the only one who thought it was a lie.
(What is it with her, crying like that? It’s obviously a lie.)
Lain was exasperated, as she saw Ririi fall for what she thought was a transparent ploy to trick them.
To Lain’s eyes, Ririi was like a young child. She was shorter and the way she spoke was childish, so maybe it was natural for her to feel that way.
(Me, lose to this child…? No way.)
Lain heard that elves excelled when it came to magic, but that did not mean they were all brilliant. Surely Ririi was one of the ones that were not.
That was the conclusion Lain reached, so she took her eyes off her, and also ignored all the other kids making noise. Instead, she sighed and looked out the window.
‘In the middle of all my classmates trembling in fear of a lie, only I know how blue this sky is’ is what a contemplative Lain thought, when suddenly, something shocking reached her ears.
“Well then, now that everyone can use magic, let’s go out on an adventure.”
“Adventure!?”
Said Ririi and Lain at the same time. All the other students also forgot their fear, and were instead excited.
“There is a big forest near the capital. How about we go there for a little practical lesson?”
“Eh, you’re kidding…? So soon!?”
Even Lain was unsure about this. Her mother told her they would be learning the basics of magic, and then beginner magic. She did not expect to suddenly be thinking about fighting monsters.
“Don’t worry, you won’t die. That forest only has low rank monsters.”
“B-but.. None of us can use magic…”
“The whole idea is for you to learn. Listen, living beings grow the most when they feel their lives are in danger.”
“Lives are in danger…”
Lain remembered a certain story. It was something unbelievable, that her mother told her when she heard Esmeralda would be in charge of her class.
‘Apparently, Miss Esmeralda once burned down a forest during a lesson.’
(So that was true… What do I do…)
Lain was worried, as were the students who were excited until a moment ago.
But in the middle of all that, one bright voice echoed.
“Miss Esmeralda, are there bouncies?”
“Bouncies?”
Esmeralda asked as she turned to Ririi.
“The ones that go all bounce bounce when they walk!”
Ririi put her small hands on the desk and tried her hardest to mimic bouncing. Her movements resembled the slime in the forest, so Esmeralda realized what ‘bouncies’ were.
“Ah… A lot. You can play with them all you want.”
“Yay! Ririh’s going adventuring!”
(I-is this girl not afraid of monsters!? Then I…!)
“M-Miss Esmeralda? Can we go right away?”
Ririi and Lain stood up at the same time, and the other students all followed, despite their feelings on the matter being very varied.
