After taking down the oni and recovering some magic energy, I throw the staff in my Storage Space and retrieve the longsword and magic mirror shield.
It’s a good thing they were on the line where I was thrown, so I found them quickly.
There’s just one problem. The recoil from using Amadachi means the sword I used is in tatters, and unusable.
I destroyed a memento.
It’s supposed to be a reward for delivering the notebook, but I haven’t done that yet. I feel bad for the deceased.
Well, there’s nothing I can do about that. I’ll ask the weapon store owner to repair it when I get back to the surface. I have a lot that’s broken, like the guardian beast armor and the greatsword of fortitude.
Come to think of it, everything I used when I fell here is broken except Fuuma’s perpetual spring scarf.
The destruction since I got here has been so big that it makes me dizzy.
I’ve gained more weapons, but I still don’t want to lose them.
The greatsword of fortitude was used by Kumagai’s younger brother, and he might be sad to see it broken. He might go mad with rage. If that happens, I’ll tell him it was the silver-haired guy’s fault. I’m sure he’ll set his sights on him.
Leaving that aside, not long after the battle with the oni, morning finally comes to the forest.
Then we stop walking.
Not because the forest is too vast and we got tired, but because I see marks I recognize on a tree.
◯ and ♨︎, along with facial features and wings.
It’s what I carved the day I found the baby. I want to believe someone else carved this, but who else could’ve picked up a baby in The Abyss?
That means we’re back to where we started.
How did this happen?
We’ve been walking straight ahead. We haven’t gotten lost, we just walked forward, so this can’t be the same place.
If we’re back, it’s like we went around the Earth.
I check mappingool, but the screen is bugged. It just shows me the distance I’ve traversed.
I call Fuuma, thinking this can’t be, and head to the sky.
There are a lot of bird monsters, but we kick them around and run.
The now thoroughbred Fuuma can run faster than when it was short and stout. It surpasses the speed of sound and runs with sonic booms.
I use Wind Magic to make sure the baby isn’t hit by Gs, but it’s too fast to protect it completely. Fuuma notices this, and attacks just fast enough for me to block.
Not many monsters can keep up with this speed, I think, but I can see some coming. A lot.
The bird monsters coming after us aren’t big. They’re about on par with crows I saw in town, with two wings and red shiny metallic bodies.
They fly in flocks at mach speed.
They’re like robots out of anime, and look cool creating sonic booms.
I’d like to take them down mostly unharmed and stuff them, but if I underestimate them, I might be in for another situation like with the oni.
So I crush them with all I have.
My experience so far tells me I can’t use Earth Magic in the sky. There’s no earth. If there was, I could.
And so, I take out earth and rocks I put in my Storage Space, and use Earth Magic.
I shape it into large bullets, strengthen them with a lot of magic energy, and use magic circles to strengthen them further.
Speed Up, Pierce, Pursue, is what I use on the over a hundred bullets I fire at the bird monsters.
They fly straight towards the monsters, and they avoid them with paper thin distance, but are then pierced as the bullets change course.
They’re shot down one by one, but soon start cutting them down with their wings.
Those metallic bodies aren’t just for show, they have the abilities to match.
There are easily over a thousand.
Even if I take down two or three hundred, their threat level will be the same.
They’re flying faster like they were roused by my attacks. The distance keeps shrinking, and I hear a magic energy hum like we’re in range of their magic.
I watch out for some sort of spell, but I’m wrong. It’s not long range magic.
The bird monsters glow red, fold their wings, and accelerate further.
It’s like they used Limit Break.
Streaks of red light approach us, but if you’re using it, so am I.
“Limit Break!”
My power is increased, and Fuuma is clad in a golden color.
We run faster in the sky and I swing my longsword at the red streaks. There’s an explosion when I make contact, but Fuuma uses wind to escape the impact.
It doesn’t have the rising dragon chakram anymore, but didn’t lose that ability. Fuuma has evolved and can use that technique even without weapons.
I send out projectile slashes, control magic, and use the longsword to rip apart many birds. Still, their numbers aren’t going down. If anything, it feels like there are more.
Their numbers are being replenished ahead of us because we’re moving so fast.
Maybe I should go back to the ground.
I’ll take down a bunch, and if they still don’t give up, I’m going back. With that decided, I take a lot of earth from the Storage Space and throw it in the air.
I control it with Earth Magic and attach it to the bird monsters. I then use up a lot of magic energy to compress it into one lump.
Earth and red colors make up a giant ball that falls to the ground.
I just managed to take out a lot at once, but unfortunately, the bird monsters aren’t slowing down.
I click my tongue, and tell Fuuma to go down. Right now I just need to worry about what’s behind us, but since bird monsters are starting to appear in front, I’m worried about being surrounded.
There’s a lake below, and we head towards it.
The bird monsters’ numbers go down the closer we are to the lake, and there aren’t any by the time we’re near it.
I was going to attack them from the ground, I wasn’t expecting them to go.
