I’m unemployed but I’m exploring the dungeon again today – Chapter 157 – The Abyss XXVIII (Illusion forest XV) – Part one

It’s okay, I don’t need it.

I said I don’t need it. I don’t want something like that.

Again, I don’t need that!

I ate roasted sweet potato, and when I woke up, Totaro had shed its skin and was all glossy.

It seems better after shedding, stretches its neck, and comes to say good morning.

I say good morning back, while thinking that’s the reason why it wasn’t feeling well, and Totaro gives me something. Its skin in a flexing pose.

I really don’t need that.

This isn’t like a good luck charm or anything, I don’t want it.

Take it because it will come in handy?

No no, it’s still a giant skin, I don’t want it.

It won’t bother me if it’s in the Storage Space?

Hn, I guess I’ll take it if you insist so much.

Thanks.

It’s so insistent about it, that I relent and take the giant skin in a flexing pose.

I touch the skin on the ground, and it feels more like overlapping transparent scales. It’s tougher than it looks. I also feel that it has good magic energy conductivity. Maybe it can be used to make equipment.

Unfortunately, I don’t know how to make equipment like armor. It will have to be after I make it back to the surface, but I’ll talk to the weapon shop owner.

Is that why Totaro gave it to me?

Looking at its face, Hinata, who is up all of a sudden, is sticking to it, so I can’t see its expression.

Hinata also seems happy that Totaro is better.

Oh well, I put the skin in the Storage Space.

I don’t know when it will be, but I’ll definitely make something nice with it and come show it.

That will mean coming here again, but if I know the way, it won’t take that long with Fuuma’s speed.

A peaceful time passes in this savage world.

I’ve been practicing making swords with magic energy, but it’s not going well. I try to compress them, control magic energy, but they still retain the form of a greatsword.

Maybe the greatsword of fortitude is that implanted in my mind, so I unconsciously create a greatsword.

Trying to fix that is getting me nowhere, so I’ll keep making greatswords for now.

Next there’s the staff. It lost that color, and changed into the wood color I assume was its original.

Thinking about it again, I don’t actually know its original color, but since it’s not trying to take over my brain when I touch it, I think I can call it a success.

The staff looks like a normal wooden pole that’s a little bent.

I feel great power in it, but its not enough. It lost that rough feeling, but it’s not right.

I feel like this isn’t it. It doesn’t feel like the thing that went against the longsword.

Hn… As I think, Hinata reaches towards it from the side.

“Kyui!”

Magic energy flows from Hinata’s hand, and it’s absorbed into the staff.

Then I feel its power increasing. That gives me an idea, so I infuse a lot of magic energy.

The change is dramatic. The staff begins to grow, takes root on the ground, and begins to grow into a giant tree. But it all happens in a second, and the giant tree that looks like it will be here forever cracks and shatters.

It disappears like it was all an illusion, and I can only watch dumbfounded.

But one staff remains.

It’s still the wooden staff, but there’s something like an amber sphere on the tip, like honey, which starts coloring the staff like it’s flowing. The sphere is wrapped in vines like they’re securing it.

The staff is painted amber.

Then there’s a woman holding it.

The woman is an illusion. Spatial Grasp tells me no one is there. But it really does look like she’s standing there.

Also, I feel like I’ve seen her. Her ears are long, her eyes are painted green, and her beauty is out of this world.

She looks like an elf out of a fantasy movie, but her limbs are made of wood, and she doesn’t really match the elves in my mind.

The long-eared woman smiles, like she’s full of affection, and I sense apologetic feelings in it.

She’s not smiling at me.

“Guah.”

Totaro makes a sound like it’s nostalgic as she smiles at it.

I look at Totaro, wondering if they know each other, and it approaches, coming closer to the woman’s face.

She also tries to touch Totaro, but since her body is an illusion, she can’t.

She looks sad, and after looking at it for a bit, looks away like she’s done saying goodbye.

Then she looks at me, and hands me the staff.

She’s telling me to take it, and I oblige by approaching and kneeling to reach out and take it.

It’s like I’m a knight receiving a decoration from a king.

It just sort of happened. That’s how much grace she has. Even if she’s an illusion.

The weight on my hand tells me the staff is there.

I look up at it. This staff has tremendous power. Power to rival the greatsword.

Maybe even more. I look forward to using it and seeing how strong it is.

Then I look at the woman.

She’s still smiling, and moving her mouth like she’s trying to tell me something.

But this illusion doesn’t make sounds. She smiles like it’s no good, and disappears.

I look around with staff in hand, and see Hinata and Fuuma looking confused. I’m sure my face is the same.

Totaro on the other hand makes a sad noise, and goes back to the lake.

I don’t know how those two are related, but it feels like they were close.

There’s a strong bond between that person and this monster.
