The argument between the four stalkers shows no signs of ending, and I’m really feeling like I want this to be over already. There’s only so much time I have to hunt on the second floor.
I want to get back before it gets dark, and hunt two or three hundred monsters while I’m here.
And so, I cut into their argument.
“Hey, I get it, you all want Maki to be your exclusive.”
“Oh, I see.”
“So you’re going to back down?”
“But why are you following me? If you’re strong, why don’t you work to increase your potential instead of doing this?”
The moment I say that, their anger turns over to me.
Did I say something I shouldn’t?
““““…””””
…But they just keep glaring without saying a word.
What?
And as I’m thinking that this is pretty weird, the guy that said he’s the brains of this team steps forward.
“Yes, we’re not too happy with our actions today either. But it’s your fault because of what you did yesterday.”
“Yesterday…”
“You took down a rare monster on the first floor, and even took home a Super Strength rare drop.”
“A-ah…”
“It’s my job to gather information, and I already looked into who you are. An insignificant slime hunter. But if that information is correct, how come you solo’d a monster our team would just barely be able to beat?
I don’t buy it! And that’s why we were watching you.”
I see. I did grow really fast after getting this skill.
I’m known for being very weak, but took down a monster that would require a team by myself. From their point of view, it must seem impossible.
“…But you approached me, so does that mean you figured something out?”
“Yes, I did. That you’re a guy that totally defies common sense!”
“…Ah?”
The ‘brain’ gets angry, and the others can’t hold back anymore and start speaking roughly too.
“Yes! We were proud of being number one in terms of delivering loot to the 525 branch! And you got a hundred minuscule magic stones in just a few hours? All in one morning!?”
“That’s not normal. We take down about a hundred fifty or two hundred monsters in one day. And we’re tired by the end of that. And how many did you take down this morning?”
“I’m pretty sure it was two hundred thirty-nine…”
I actually felt I didn’t hunt too many, because I was too concerned with the people following me. And when I filled the map, I was very careful not to hunt a hundred goblins in a row
That’s why I thought I actually didn’t hunt too many.
“It’s weird. Don’t you get tired!?”
“Well, I do, but it’s fun, so…”
I do get tired, but doing stuff like unveiling that mystery and filling out the map with my own two feet are fun. The sense of accomplishment I get blows that tiredness out of me.
“Kuh, is this because you’ve been at it for three years and we’re new? If this is what happens in a single day, the gap is just going to get bigger and bigger as the days go by. If we’re stoic like that too, we also can… We’re not gonna lose to him! Let’s go everyone! We’re not gonna let him beat us!”
“““Ou!”””
I guess they settled things by themselves. These noisy guys say something as they leave, and disappear from my sight before I know it. I’m pretty sure that corner leads to the third floor.
“So it’s strange… Well, until a few days ago, my daily limit was three hundred slime.
But my stats went up and I have the Physical Strengthening skill, so three hundred is easy now. Maybe now I could go over a thousand.”
Well, let’s not get distracted while fighting monsters, or a rare monster might spawn where there are people. And hunting a thousand would fill my bag of minuscule magic stones for sure.
“Now that the spectators are gone, I can finally restart. Oh, and let’s test Fire Magic!”
I didn’t get to test my new frontier that is magic yesterday! Let’s do it!
◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇
I open the dungeon network application, look up Fire Magic, and see that at level one I can use the spells Torch and Fireball.
Torch creates a small ball of fire to be used instead of a lamp, and Fireball is an offensive spell that calls out a big flaming ball.
It sounds like both move according to the wishes of the user, and can be activated and deactivated just by thinking it, without having to say the name of the spell. Also, as long as the user doesn’t stop thinking about them, they won’t disappear automatically even if they can close their eyes, or they leave their field of vision.
It sounds useful, but when I use one and force myself to think about something else, it disappears right away.
I guess you have to constantly use the resource that is your attention if you’re going to use magic.
Wouldn’t that make it hard to use while fighting with a sword…? No, it’s not that bad if I think about it as an additional means to control a field of battle.
“But it’d take a lot of attention to use both Torch and Fireball at the same time. Dungeons have dark areas, so there might come a time when I will use Torch to illuminate, Fireball to attack, and have to keep fighting with my sword. I should make sure to get used to this.”
It might be hard, but it’s also good news. Now I have another long range attack, besides attacking with the iron knives dropped by goblins using the Throw skill.
The application doesn’t go into detail about what’s the limit to using magic, so I’ll have to see as I use it.
“Gigih.”
And as I think about that, a killer rabbit appears.
I didn’t notice I was in the area near the river, but I can see killer rabbits here and there.
“All right, let’s experiment with you guys first!”
