Walking in another world – Chapter 302 – Records of a certain otherworlder – Part one

“My name is Yutaka, and I’m one of the people summoned from another world.”

He looks to be twenty something years old.

“If you’re seeing these records, did you understand the words I left behind? Or was it just a coincidence? I have no way to make sure, but I want you to listen. And if possible, save them.”

It’s a one-sided conversation, but it’s basically a video, so it is what it is

“I used to live in a different world. I was called here along with my classmates, and ordered to fight the demon king. We were told that was a condition for our return to our world.”

He looks like his eyes are facing far away. Is he thinking back to that time?

“After a fierce battle, and a lot of sacrifices, the demon king was defeated. Many of my classmates died, and I lost most of my power in that battle too.”

I can see even through this image that he’s clenching his fists tightly. Is he frustrated?

“What awaited me after this was a cruel reality. Not only was there no demon king core, but a demon also told us the demon king was originally human. He said the demon king was born when the world was overflowing with negative emotions, to prevent it from breaking.

We didn’t even know if that was true anymore.”

He says a lot of his classmates who heard that were grief stricken. There was no way to return to their world, even though that hope was what kept them fighting.

Once that hope was lost, some even lost their minds.

“The demon was gone, and we returned to confirm the real situation. We didn’t know what was truth or falsehood anymore.

But that was the worst thing we could have done. All that awaited us was betrayal. On the surface, we were received as the heroes who defeated the demon king, but the moment we pressed them for answers, the mask of kindness was torn off and they attacked us.”

Suddenly I feel eyes on me, and when I turn to look, I see Chris and the others looking at me with worry.

I say I’m fine, and turn back to the image in front of us.

Ignis already told me there was a good chance I couldn’t go back.

“My partners were taken one after the other, and in the spur of the moment, I used my last skill. My skills were special. They were extremely powerful, but they came with a cost. There was a risk that I would lose skills.”

He says that was his first regret.

“At the time, I only thought about saving myself, and ran away. Once my head cooled off, I tried to save the others, but I lost my skills and had no one else to turn to, so there was nothing I could do.

Thinking back, I was like a caged bird all that time. All I did was fight, so I didn’t understand this world at all.”

He says that looking back, he saw that they were purposefully keeping them ignorant.

“I left the country to escape, and kept on moving forward without anything to do or anywhere to go, until I collapsed.

Then I met a girl. I knew about people like her. Elves live long lives, so they’re very wise people. That was what I knew from my world, but what I heard here led me to believe that was true anyway.”

His face turns into a light smile. Is he feeling nostalgic? Or is it just a good memory for him?

“She called herself Lorna, heard my nonsensical ramblings without any displeasure showing on her face, and in the end, asked a question. ‘What do you want to do?’”

Apparently her eyes healed his despairing heart after he lost everything.

“I wanted to save the others, but I knew right away it couldn’t be done. It was impossible for one person to go against the whole country. Maybe there would be a way if I could still use skills, but I lost those too.

So, what could I do? Once I started thinking about that, I figured I could warn people who would come next. That was what I worked for, to try to save people from being victimized like me and my classmates.”

And that was when Lorna said she would help him.

“She helped me investigate, but there was so little time. I had no way to look into the truth about the demon king either. I looked into the eras when demon kings were born, but it would be at least decades, maybe over a hundred years until the next demon king was born. If I was unlucky, my lifespan wouldn’t be enough.”

It seems obvious, considering the lifespan of humans. Not to mention that daily life in this world is full of dangers.

“When I said this to Lorna, she told me there might be a way, but if it went badly, I could lose my life. I clung to it. I felt like I already died once, so if there was a chance, I wanted to try it.”

Lorna said she was worried about what he said, but he was still determined.

He knew he was being obstinate, but that was the only way he knew how to live at that point. Yutaka realized he was reckless at the time.

“That way she talked about was to receive blood from the dragon king. If I didn’t adapt, I would die, but if I did, it would extend my lifespan. I didn’t know how long it would give me, but I jumped at the opportunity. I understood it was foolish, but if there was a chance…”

He says he pictured someone stern when he heard about the dragon king, but he was generous.

The impression I got was a little different. Is it just me?

“The dragon king thought about it, and in the end, performed the blood ritual. Lorna’s words probably played a big part in that, but even though I walked the line between life and death, in the end, I adapted.

The dragon king said that when I began to age, the effect of the ritual would be starting to wear off. Still, I would live at least five hundred years, so that was enough.”

He continues, and I get a good picture of what he saw.

To summarize, the demon king tends to be reborn when a lot of people die in a big war.

It’s like it’s stopping the destruction of mankind, or even distracting the attention of influential people fascinated with the idea of war.

I also understand now that every time a demon king is born, people are summoned from another world. And it’s always the Kingdom of Elesya that does it.

Also, they don’t let people summoned from another world leave because they’re powerful, and have powerful skills. They take and use their blood, and apparently make powerful warriors.

Yutaka says that’s how what was originally a small country gradually expanded.

When I hear that, I turn to Hikari. It looks like she hasn’t realized it, but maybe…

She has black hair, and features not very common in this world. She might have inherited the blood of otherworlders from the past.
