Starting today, I’m Tanaka the full time employee.
Ah, hello, I’m Tanaka, a full time employee. Good morning everyone
My name is Tanaka, and I am a full time employee.
I’m going to work in my big size suit I hastily got yesterday.
Maybe it’s because I’ve been out of work for a month, but I really didn’t expect them to tell me to go work for them the next day. Are they just that short staffed?
Their conditions were no problem, and the monetary side is pretty good compared to what I’ve experienced so far. It would be a shame to quit when they treat me so well.
Ah, good morning.
Yes, I will be working here starting today, thank you for having me.
Why do you look so surprised?
Did you not think I would be hired?
I was told to ask for Chief Gotouta. Where is he?
The fifth floor? Thank you.
I say to the receptionist with a slight tone of displeasure, as I make my way to the elevator.
I can forgive a colleague with just that much.
I get off on the fifth floor, and see people checking defensive equipment like armor and shields that came from many workshops.
There aren’t that many people, and they don’t notice me.
I feel bad for making them stop working, but I have to ask.
Hum, excuse me.
Ah, I’m sorry if I scared you.
I will be working here starting today. My name is Tanaka, and it’s a pleasure to meet you.
So, I was told to ask for Chief Gotouta. Where is he?
I talk to someone who’s working, and is scared upon seeing me. Did they not hear about this mid-career recruitment? But I’m told Chief Gotouta is in the office in the back.
I thank the person who told me, and excuse myself as I enter the room. And I’m taken to Chief Gotouta after telling a person nearby why I’m here.
What I see is a middle-aged man that looks athletic. He’s looking at some sort of document, but stops to look at me.
Ah, my name is Haruto Tanaka.
I will be working here from now on.
Thank you for having me.
Yes, I need to sign these. There are a lot. Do you mind if I check them?
There’s no time? Sign them already?
That sounds like… Yes, I will.
Eh? Get ready quick?
For what?
Dungeon? Test?
What do you mean?
◇ ◇ ◇
And so, I’ve been taken to the twenty-first floor of the dungeon. A place I’ve been visiting a lot lately.
After greeting Chief Gotouta, I was taken to a changing room where I was made to put on something that looks like a motion capture suit for CGI, and was brought here to the dungeon without them telling me why.
Hum, what is this all about?
Filming? What?
Hold that? It’s a big shield. This is called a tower shield, right?
Brace because you’re going to call an orc?
…Why?
◇ ◇ ◇
What I was put through today was torture. And suffice to say, I was on the tortured side.
They told me to hold the shield and block orc attacks as best I could. And they recorded that.
I had to do it until the shield broke, at which point, I took a direct hit from the orc, and the staff standing by took it down. I had to do it for every piece of equipment they brought, and it was past eight at night by the time it was over.
The work hours aren’t that awful, but the actual work sure is.
When I complained about that, they told me that was why they hired me so fast.
And that there’s still work to do, so they’re counting on me tomorrow too.
Yes! Leave it to me!!
Is what I said.
It looks like my corporate drone tendencies are alive and well.
◇ ◇ ◇
The next day, I get changed and go to the twenty-first floor of the dungeon once again.
There were seven of us yesterday, but twenty today.
Among them are people that look like models. This might be different from yesterday.
…Is what I thought, but I’m still taking orc attacks.
I’m using a round shield right now, the kind that straps to my arm. It’s not that different from the one I normally use, and it’s easy to handle, but it’s supposed to be used to deflect attacks. This is my first time using one of these to actually block orc attacks from the front.
I keep taking them and taking them and taking them. I want to parry, but they got mad when I did it yesterday, so I keep blocking.
When I take a stance to counterattack, a dull gong sound echoes, and I hold up my shield.
When I peek to the side, I see people setting up cameras and chatting.
Are you making fun of me!?
Rage boils, and I fail to block an attack from the orc, instead letting its club hit me in the stomach.
I almost throw up, but hold it back and grab the shield again.
No no, there’s a monster attacking me. I need to focus or I could get seriously hurt.
And then I once again continue until the shield is broken.
There are breaks, but I’m left alone, and I see them filming the people that look like models beautifully taking down an orc.
When they’re done, they’re handed towels and sports drinks, but they just leave a potion behind for me.
It’s okay. It’s still okay.
On the way back, I’m told they’re counting on me again tomorrow, and I give an energetic response back.
◇ ◇ ◇
I’ve been with Guardian HD for three days. And today, I’m once again blocking orc attacks with a shield.
As this day draws to a close, I’m told I have different work waiting for me tomorrow.
These hellish days are over.
◇ ◇ ◇
The next day, they make me put on a full suit of armor to take orc attacks.
The shocks pierce to my body, and it’s all I can do to bear it, even with the Toughness skill.
So by different, they meant I went from a shield to armor.
I hear someone sound impressed and say look at him fly, and my bloodthirst rises as I think about sending him flying.
◇ ◇ ◇
It’s my fifth day.
And it’s my day off! I was excited, but they just called me saying to go there quickly.
I want to say no, but I skip my way there after hearing I get ten thousand yen for working on a day off.
And then the orcs take care of me.
◇ ◇ ◇
It’s the sixth day.
And it’s my real day off! And as I sleep in, Ai calls me.
Normally I would pick up right away. I would. I probably would pick up, but I don’t feel like it today.
I sleep until noon, and the phone rings again, this time showing it’s from Chief Gotouta.
Yes, it’s Tanaka!
No! It’s all right, I was just sleeping.
Now?
Help with a movie shoot?
Hum, is that part of my job?
Ah, it is. Very well. I will be right there.
There goes my day off.
◇ ◇ ◇
Today’s work is pretty tough.
I don’t have to take orc attacks, but there’s no way a guy like me that’s not even an actor can do a good job playing the role of a normal person being attacked by monsters after they flooded from the dungeon, so we have to redo it several times.
As the day is drawing to a close, and I got back to the company to change, I hear the following conversation.
“Hey, that fat guy is still coming?”
“Are you serious? The last guy ran away on the second day. That’s awesome.”
“You mean stupid? Chief Gotouta is famous for working people to the bone. Does he not know that?”
“Ah, probably not. I’ve never seen that fat guy talk to a coworker.”
“Seriously?”
“Hey, what are you chatting about?”
“Uoh! Don’t scare us. About that fat guy. Tanaka, right? Why hasn’t he quit already?”
“Ah, the guy Chief Gotouta has his eye on?”
“Has his eye on?”
“Yeah, Chief Gotouta is a power harasser, but his results are impressive, right? And he said Tanaka was awesome. That he’d be carrying the company on his back one day.”
“Are you serious!? He sees that much potential in him!?”
“No doubt about it. After all…”
After hearing that, I quietly exit the changing room.
I see. Hearing he has expectations for me makes me a little happy, as I go home.
And the next day, I slap a letter of resignation on Chief Gotouta’s face.
