“We don’t have the time to check! Stop moving your mouth and protect the townspeople!”
The battle continued after Shian and the others’ escape. The guards did their best to protect the people that had not fled yet, and fought Regen and his underlings.
They prepared beforehand, so they were fighting from a somewhat advantageous position but… fighting while protecting others was hard.
Assigning guards to rescue and protect meant fewer guards to face the rampage. That said, they could not ignore the people and fight with their full power, so they were always going to have this disadvantage.
The supervisor in charge decided where to allocate personnel, and also participated in the battle.
Still, the tough fight continued, and a parent and child were about to be attacked by a ruffian.
“Hihihi…! Cute female brat. This is gonna sell high to a pervert…!”
“N-no…!”
“P-please not the children…!!”
A member of this child kidnapping organization targeted a little girl.
He reached out to her with weapon in hand, but Jinba got in front of him with sword in hand.
“That’s not gonna happen! Uooooh!!”
“Wha!? Guaah!?”
The ruffian took a sword thrust with a powerful charge behind it and was flung away.
Jinba breathed heavily, and yelled to the scared parent and child.
“Run away now! Don’t waste time!”
Jinba urged them to get to safety quickly, as more ruffians drew closer behind them.
Jinba felt he could not deal with these two in time, but as they were approaching to get revenge for their comrade, they were blown away.
“Are you okay, Jinba!?”
“Yuugo!? Thanks!!”
Said Jinba after Yuugo jumped in from the side and saved him from the impending danger.
They continued working together to mow them down as they talked.
“What was with the students from your school!? Why did they do that!?”
“Don’t complain at me! They’re only a nuisance to me too!”
Jinba swung his sword and Yuugo his fists, taking down the underlings one by one.
But there were so many that it felt their numbers were not going down, and Jinba noticed the parent and child he just saved were still there.
“Hey you! This is dangerous! Get away from here!”
“I-I can’t…! I got separated from my youngest and have to find…!”
“What!?”
Yuugo’s expression changed as he learned a child had gotten lost in that chaos.
A child’s cries echoed as if timing it perfectly, and when they went there, they saw a child just about to be caught by Regen.
“I can’t forget to stock up on merchandise in a battle. I really am an excellent villain.”
“Dammit! That’s not good!!”
Groaned Jinba as he saw Regen take out the birdcage to put the child in it.
Yuugo was already running there, and by the time Jinba noticed it, he was already holding the child tightly.
“Hahaha! There’s nothing you can do!”
“Uh! Ooooh…!!”
“Yuugo!!”
Whether he judged he would not make it in time by attacking Regen or made the decision on the spot to protect the child… Yuugo tried to escape with the boy, but was hit by the light from the birdcage and sucked into it with the boy.
Jinba saw it all, and gulped as he had a flashback.
(It’s the same…! The same as that day…!!)
He could never forget that fateful day. The day he lost his partner Thomas, when he did what Yuugo just did.
He protected a child, got caught by the birdcage, and was freed after it was all over… He thought back to it, realized he was in the same position as Thomas, and held the foldable bowgun in his pocket tightly.
(Partner, it looks like… it’s my turn.)
He said to Thomas in heaven with a tragic resolve.
He took out his partner’s memento, held it up, and yelled at his sworn enemy.
“Don’t move, Regen!”
