Walking in another world – Chapter 335 – Intermission – Part fourteen

Side: Elesya’s chivalric order

“Are you sure about this commander?”

“…? About what?”

“The third chivalric order. And having the fifth order full of new recruits guarding the capital. I don’t think they can defend it if something happens.”

“…You say that, but there’s no point in taking them to the dark forest. The third order is just a bunch of nobles, and basically exists in name only. They’ll just get in the way.”

“I-I guess that’s true, but still…”

“We have to rely on the adventurers. And make sure the demons have their eyes on us. Not to mention that if we fail, humanity might be doomed anyway.”

“Yes, we, the second order, along with the first order, are just going to have to hold the line and hold off their attacks.”

“And if the heroes take advantage of that opening and defeat the demon king, it will all be over. We’ll just have to do our best to make sure the heroes reach the demon king safely.”

“But how long is it going to go on for? The invasion of the dark forest has been going for over twenty days already.”

“The monsters won’t stop attacking. I don’t know what we would have done without the Sorcerer King’s area magic on our side.”

“And the beast king’s reinforcements split between the defensive city and the capital. I wish they came to the front line.”

“Blame the supreme commander. He said he didn’t want help from a beast.”

“Allies pulling each other down when there are monsters and demons to fight…”

“That’s not anything new. The empire asked the republic for assistance, but they didn’t gather much.”

“But apparently a good number of sorcerer units from the Magic State and priests from the Holy Kingdom have joined. Their high morale really helps.”

“That’s because a demon killed the saint in the holy kingdom. They’re still angry about that. All right, we’ve rested long enough. Second order, forward!”

◇ ◇ ◇

“H-help.”

“M-my arm, my arm.”

“Calm down. Get back in formation! Chivalric order, protect the sorcerers!”

“Take the wounded to the back! Ask the priests to heal them!”

“The monsters are charging. Adventurers, hold them!”

“Commander, we’re in trouble.”

“Yes, it’s so overwhelming… And to think a mere twenty demons are enough to spread so much damage… And they’re working along with the monsters.”

“S-should we retreat?”

“No, we need to form a defensive line first. Use this while we hold on.”

“What is it?”

“A magic item from the king. Apparently this can seal the demons’ movements.”

“T-then we have to use it quickly!”

“It works for a limited time, so we have to make it count. Use it next time the demons attack!”

“Understood. But will it really work?”

“Yes… It should.”

“…”

“All right, now!”

“…! Commander, their movements really are duller. Not just the demons, but the monsters too.”

“Attack! Defeat the demons! This is our only chance!”

◇ ◇ ◇

“W-we managed to beat them back.”

“Yes, but more than half escaped. They retreated in the middle of the confusion.”

“The first order suffered a lot of damage. Apparently they also used that magic item, but still…”

“Being able to fly really is a big advantage. Almost no one but the Sorcerer King can reach them.”

“Yes. More importantly, what are we going to do next?”

“Advance once the wounded are treated. If we retreat now, there’s a good chance they’ll find the heroes infiltrating.”

“But we also suffered a lot of damage.”

“We don’t have a choice. Not to mention that if we retreat, the monsters might attack us from the back.”

“Our one saving grace is that we don’t have to worry about food.”

“And that we can retrieve magic stones. Apparently this magic item can be used again, if we have the magic stones it needs. It just can’t be used continuously.”

“Really?”

“Yes, I was told something about conditions.”

“You really should have remembered that sort of thing.”

“I don’t get the complex stuff. A-n-y-w-a-y. Good quality magic stones allow it to operate for longer, so get strong magic stones from adventurers. I’m sure they won’t mind if they know the reason. They’ve tasted the power of the demons first hand.”

“…Will they? Those S rank adventurers are monsters in their own right. Most of them haven’t really suffered any damage.”

“…What about the A ranks?”

“Ah, the A ranks retreated and only fought the monsters. The S ranks held back the demons.”

“…I see. Anyway, go ask them.”

◇ ◇ ◇

Side: Demon king’s army

“Are you sure Mister Ghido?”

“Yes, leave it to Ignis and the others.”

“But what about defending the demon king!?”

“…This was her request. Are you going to ignore it!?”

“But… Our power is limited over there.”

“According to Ou, a hero is carrying the sacred sword that is the linchpin of the barrier. The barrier should be weak.”

“But wouldn’t they know that too?”

“They must have measures in place.”

“T-then…!”

“It’s all right. That’s not a problem. We have people who can assist.”

“Assist?”

“Yes, that crafty Ignis has been working. You can expect at least that.”

“Y-yes, It’s Mister Ignis after all. He can really formulate plans unlike Mister Ghido.”

“…Hn? And what do you mean by that?”

“N-nothing in particular…”

“Tch, just hurry. They should be shorthanded now. This battle should end everything.”

“Y-yes.”

◇ ◇ ◇

Side: Dragon Kingdom

“Did you call, father?”

“Yes, thank you for coming. I am giving you this seat at once.”

“F-father? What has gotten into you so suddenly?”

“This is not sudden, I have been thinking about this for a while. But you are still immature, so Yuini will offer you assistance in the meantime. Is that all right, Yuini?”

“…Yes, if that is your order.”

“Yes… Sirk, don’t look so worried. You will do well. Have more confidence in yourself. And Sahana, be a good advisor, and help Sirk.”

“Yes, father.”

“…Where are you going, father?”

“…To settle something. I have watched over this country for a long time, but that cannot go on forever. Think of this as a generational change for that purpose.”

“Very well… Sirk, Sahana, say goodbye.”

“…I’m honestly not sure about this. But father, I’ll protect my big sister and Sahana.”

“Think about your people too, big brother.”

“Yes, that’s the spirit. I’m sure I can count on you.”

“Big brother, I know being complimented by our father makes you happy, but your face is practically melting.”

“…Try to keep it together too, Sahana.”

“Yes. Let’s go, big brother.”

“I assume we don’t have to be worried, but father, please be careful.”

◇ ◇ ◇

“Are you sure?”

“Yes. I really am going there to settle it.”

“…Is that so?”

“Alfriede, I’m sorry, but look after them.”

“Don’t worry, they are like my dear children to me too…”

“…You don’t resent me?”

“…Do I? I think she… Asha, wouldn’t. And I know how concerned you have been.”

“…I see.”

“I’m more worried about them. Does it have to be now?”

“Yes, this might be the first and last chance.”

“Is it about that otherworlder boy?”

“No, not just that. The demons are also done preparing. I need to act now.”

“…Then there is nothing I can say.”

“…I leave the rest to you, my sister-in-law.”
