A cut tentacle returns to its previous length and shakes… Twitches? As it moves.
They regenerate after being cut but it takes some time.
I wonder how many we can cut in the meantime, but I know that’s pretty hard.
First, we take out the three breath ones (not the one that attacks with poison and paralysis), and the one that shoots fangs. That leaves nine.
It goes well this far, but then the polyopus’ movements change.
It’s been attacking proactively, but here it turns more defensive. It’s clearly buying time.
It spreads magic to keep us away, and once that stops, it uses the breaths that cause poison and paralysis, and acid and decomposition.
Even if we get through these attacks and get close to the body, the metallic tentacle, the elastic one, and the super regenerative one keep us at bay.
The metallic one can withstand a hit of a magic energy infused mithril sword, and the elastic one bounces from hits into weird directions, disrupting attacks. The super regenerative one keeps growing and blocking the way. And it thrusts when there’s an opening.
This last one is a bother because once it’s cut, it moves around freely for a bit.
It can’t jump up, but it will attack if we get close to other tentacles.
It stays there, like a trap. That’s new.
The magic eye tentacle also keeps us at bay.
It doesn’t stop us for very long, but it’s hard to dodge, and being immobile for that moment is tough.
Thinking about this being used offensively makes a chill run down my spine.
The polyopus really knows what its tentacles can do.
Still, what keeps this from being despairing is that we can tell we’re wearing it down. If not, I’d be discouraged already.
It uses magic energy to regenerate, and also to use its skills. Stuff like breath doesn’t use a lot, but magic attacks and defense, and the magic eyes use a lot.
Despite the short duration, the magic eyes’ spend a lot. I guess it’s using time stop magic even if it’s only for a moment.
I’m sure that’s why it doesn’t keep using the magic eyes.
I leave the front to Sera, Argo, and the others, and attack from a distance.
Chris and I each stand one one side, Mia is behind Argo and the others, and Hikari is behind the polyopus, so we can attack with magic and throwing knives from four directions.
Rurika is with Chris, in case something happens.
We aim at the polyopus with magic and magic infused weapons, and it turns to Chris. When we attack again, it uses the magic blocking tentacle to block Chris’ magic.
It looks like it senses the biggest threat from her magic. That’s a good assessment and I’m glad it’s wary of Chris.
Her spirit magic is on another level, but it can’t be fired continuously.
She can if she forces herself, but the strain on her is big, and she could collapse depending on how much MP she has. But the polyopus doesn’t know any of that.
Chris has switched to regular magic. She hasn’t stopped because she wants to draw its attention.
Regardless, the monster’s attention is still on her, which tells me that with its defense, it can’t gauge the power of spells.
Conversely, it could mean that its defense is high enough that it can block any magic.
Anyway, I’m going to use composite magic while its attention is on Chris.
Hikari keeps throwing knives and sending Projectile Slashes.
Then the super regenerating tentacle starts blocking my magic.
It screamed when it hit its body, so is it now wary of composite magic?
I also have trouble using it one after the other, so I have to pick my spots, but when I do fire it, the super regenerating tentacle blocks it. Although it uses its defensive tentacle when it can.
Seeing that makes me think it doesn’t feel pain or take damage unless we hit the main body. It doesn’t seem hurt when we attack the tentacles.
I’m not the only one who has noticed this. Argo and the others have realized taking on the tentacles won’t finish it, and are targeting the main body. But the polyopus won’t just let them.
It didn’t really move at first, but now it’s using the tentacles to get into different positions and keep its distance.
As a result, it has the time it needs, and the cut tentacles regenerate one after the other.
Before I know it, they’re all back, and we’re back to the start.
But unlike the start, it has lost magic energy. But we’re also being worn down.
Chris and I use MP to attack with magic, and so does Mia with her healing and support magic.
Hikari and Rurika use SP, and everyone else loses stamina, and blood when they’re hurt.
After an hour and with no end in sight, it feels like the fight has just begun.
