I’m unemployed but I’m exploring the dungeon again today – Chapter 146 – The Abyss XVII (Illusion forest IV) – Part two

With a shining light, I look at the result of my harvest.

I pulled grass, and what I got wasn’t just carrots. Also what look like red potatoes, red daikon, and red lotus root.

It’s a lot, but it was only where the grass developed. Outside of this, the grass is just grass.

And so, I try watering grass with that light water. I pull it, and there’s a red daikon.

Hm hm. I get it. Around here, I get vegetables if I water the grass.

You idiot, why would something that weird happen just because it’s the dungeon?

Well, it’s nice to have. I just can’t really accept it.

I put these things that look like vegetables in the Storage Space, and think about it.

I don’t get it, but it doesn’t feel right because it’s too convenient.

But the answer to that question comes the next time we take a break and eat.

Oeh!

I got careless. I got tricked by the carrots.

The carrots are edible, but the rest is different.

The daikon explodes in all directions when I cut it, and the potatoes release a foul stench when I boil them. I’m not even thinking about trying the lotus root at this point.

I throw everything away except the carrots.

People say you shouldn’t waste food, but it’s fine, because that’s not food.

The baby has been crying because of that horrible smell. I gave Fuuma a barrel with water and it stuffed its head in it nose first.

I sent the smell away with wind, but it lingers. It’s in my clothes.

Dammit, I think as I take the barrel from Fuuma. I change the water, and put the wool clothes in it.

I put in laundry detergent, and wash it with light water. As this makeshift laundry happens, I wash my body.

I haven’t had the luxury of using soap here, so I’m using a bunch.

I clean myself in the darkness while warding off ghosts with water, clean the baby, clean Fuuma with shampoo, and the smell is finally gone.

The baby stops crying, and falls asleep like it got tired from crying.

I’m tired too, so I leave the laundry, take a blanket from the Storage Space, and wrap myself in it to take a nap.

I’ll eat after I wake up. That smell took away my appetite.

Light bursts from the barrel as I sleep, but I’m kind of tired, so sleep comes first.

◇ ◇ ◇

I tilt a beer mug and gulp it down.

“…Kah! Tasty! I can’t quit this.”

Kuha! No kidding.

“Are you okay though? You picked up a kid.”

I’ll return it to its parent, it’s fine.

“But it’s a monster, right? It has wings and magic energy. Ah, kalbi and loin. And two servings of marucho.”

And green soybeans and tongue.

I know it’s a monster, but I can’t abandon it. It’s a baby, and it can’t use its own magic energy. If I let it be, it would die.

“You say that, but weren’t you almost killed by its friend? Ah, you want sangchu?”

Yes.

Well… But I feel like if I take care of it and bump into its parent, I’ll be spared. Honestly, I don’t think I can beat that silver-haired guy.

“That was bad. You had zero chance, right? But he’s missing one hand, so can’t you get over it somehow?”

That’s because he got careless. Even when he was spent, I couldn’t reach him. If he wanted to kill me from the start, there would be no saving me. Damn! Another mug!

“But why did he retreat? Did you do something? Was it that light water? I’ll have another one too.”

Who knows. But…

“But?”

It kind of looked like he was gonna cry.

“Cry… Ah, the meat is done. Maybe the water made him regain his senses or something.”

Dunno, don’t care, it’s a waste of time thinking about it. Only he knows. Ah, take sangchu, and doubanjiang.

“Yes. But you’re right. So, what are you going to do?”

About what?

“What if no one comes to get the kid?”

…They will.

“You don’t know that. It might be a kind of monster that doesn’t raise its young and leaves them to fend for themselves. Are you going to raise it until it can stand on its own?”

Dunno, I’ll think about it when the time comes.

“That’s not very responsible. But it’s just like you.”

What’s that supposed to mean?

“I’m not badmouthing you, it’s important to be optimistic.”

How did you make that connection?

“From you.”

I understand this less and less.

“You’d get it if you looked at a mirror. Wait! How did you lose so much weight!? No one would recognize you compared to the first time I saw you!”

Now? It’s fine, I was always slender.

“Liar. You being fat was an iron rule. A non fat Tanaka is just a Tanaka without characteristics.”

Apologize to Tanakas across the nation.

“Hahaha, no. Looks like the kid is calling you. We’ll call it here today. Come drink with me again.”

Yes, but bring the others next time.

“Yes. On the surface.”

I’ll have to get out of here quickly then.

“I’ll pray for your safety.”

Until next time.

“Yes, next time.”

Kyururu, kyururu, I hear as the baby’s cries wake me up.

ーーー

Ghost.

Remnants of monsters slain in the forest. Since they were strong monsters, their ghosts also have power. They wander the forest until they are satisfied, and suddenly disappear. Attacking the living is a habit from when they were alive. Half of them do not attack.
