Now that I know that, I change my attack method.
I cast wind pressure from above like a down burst to stop it. But slow magic like that won’t hit it, and the old person oni escapes the area.
I was expecting that, so I control the ground and attack with an avalanche of earth and rocks from all directions to crush it. But even that is blocked.
It taps the ground with its staff and creates vines around it, which block the avalanche.
I was wrong. I thought for sure the trees had a mind of their own and attacked me. If it made them attack me, it’s stronger than I thought.
But that doesn’t change what I have to do.
I activate magic circles.
Speed Up, Break, Pierce, Destroy, Explosion. A rock spear is enveloped in a tornado, and I release it the moment the old person oni goes over the rock, earth, and vine objet.
It looks shocked.
It tries to create a wave with its staff to block, but it’s too late.
There’s a snapping sound, an intense explosion sound echoes, and a wave of destructive impact runs in the direction where the spear went.
Many trees are destroyed and all the ground in front of me is gouged.
The dark forest is opened and illuminated by a faint light.
There are sparks flying in the destruction, like it was electrified.
I swing the longsword, and hold it up again.
In front of me is the old person oni’s staff that should’ve been blown away without a trace. There’s also an arm holding it, along with a neck and head.
They’re no thicker than the staff, but miraculously, it’s still alive.
No, it might not be a miracle.
A black thing that looks like miasma is coming out of the gray staff and enveloping the old person oni.
It gives me nothing but a bad feeling, so I send a few projectile slashes, but they dissipate with a sound when they hit the staff.
I block the incoming magic energy wave with the magic mirror shield, and face the old person oni again.
What I see isn’t the old person oni, but a young and rough oni.
This oni still has two horns on its head, and it’s a little taller than me. Its body is covered in rags, but it’s symmetrical and muscular, like the body of a fighter with no excesses.
The oni grins, and drops its posture.
I misunderstood again. I thought for sure the oni was the main body.
The magic energy I thought came from the oni is actually coming from the staff.
I don’t know if the oni was using the staff or the other way around, but I need to destroy it or get it away from the oni, or this will never end.
Why did I have to come across something so annoying, I think with a sigh.
◇ ◇ ◇
The second round starts with magic from the oni.
I want to complain about it using magic when it’s holding up the staff to strike, but I do that too.
Many magic energy balls are released, which accelerate in a second.
I use Earth Magic to create a wall right in front of me, step back, and go around it to create distance between me and the oni.
A ball of magic energy is deflected when it touches a rock wall, but the wall can’t retain its form and falls into sand.
I then send a projectile slash against a ball, which also disappears after being deflected.
I fire a rock bullet at another, with the same result. It looks like I can only destroy one at a time.
Those magic energy balls have a lot of power. I could die if they hit me directly, but they’re easy enough if I know how to deal with them.
I keep firing rock bullets, destroying all the balls.
I can nullify magic energy waves with the magic mirror armor.
I can win.
I face the oni, and jump back.
The spot where I was standing bursts, and a lot of magic flies at me.
Ghosts. Ghost monsters are attacking.
I look up, and see Fuuma rushing through the sky, kicking around ghosts and evading magic.
It’s slower than usual because it’s worried about the baby on its back.
Fuuma won’t go down easily, but I should hurry.
The oni accelerates towards me, most likely because it sees an opening. It swings its staff enveloped with magic energy to hit me.
I dispel the magic energy with a rock bullet to the staff, and ward it off with my longsword. The oni’s posture breaks, and I run the blade on its neck.
I’m about to cut its head, but that conviction is soon betrayed.
I cut its neck, but the next moment, it reattaches and the cut is gone.
I can tell this is happening through Spatial Grasp, and guide the ghost’s magic towards the oni.
I release a projectile slash after gaining some distance, but it creates a magic energy wave that erases it.
I look at the oni, and it’s completely unharmed. Its face is more vicious, probably because it’s angry that I cut its neck.
From there, it’s a quagmire.
The oni quickly regenerates when I cut it. It doesn’t matter if I carve its neck, hands, legs, and body.
I can deal with its techniques if I don’t get careless, so I’m focused and not flustered. Still, it’s bad how it uses its ball magic and waves when I get close.
The wave magic in particular cancels other magic, so it’s really strong.
I dodge its magic and get close to try to destroy the staff, but it’s like it’s made from an unbreakable ore, so I can’t even damage it.
I assume its wooden appearance is just for show.
I cut the oni’s neck.
It shows an opening for a second when it regenerates, and I activate a magic circle to power up the wind blades I send.
Its body is full of small cuts, but it recovers like it’s nothing the next moment.
I step away when a ghost attacks from the side, and the oni comes at me.
I use a bullet to remove the magic energy from its staff as it swings it, and hold up the longsword. I’ve done this numerous times.
As I think it really should learn already, magic energy comes back to the staff as I block it.
It’s too late to regret it, and the intense impact sends me flying back.
The scenery goes by really fast.
I fly over the ground carved with magic, and don’t stop even after hitting trees. Trees are destroyed one after the other, and eventually I stop feeling pain all over my body, and realize my arms and legs fell. I stop not long after that.
It’s strange how I’m still alive. I might not be human anymore.
I should stop joking like that and heal quickly.
