I’ve had a few meals, but it’s still night.
I’ve been moving in this mountainous region using Fuuma’s Wind Magic, and fighting many monsters.
The monsters with crocodile heads always move in groups, meaning if I see one, there’s at least ten. They’re trouble because they use strong earth magic and move fast.
Still, they only attack with earth type magic, so I can either tank their attacks while Fuuma finishes them, or I can let myself get pierced and take them down.
There are also bat monsters that are bigger than a person, use magic to hide themselves, and attack without making a sound. And scorpions that have a powerful poison and move twice as fast as a person on land.
They’re all trouble, but beatable if I catch them on Spatial Grasp. Not that they’re easy, I’m still having a lot of trouble. I’ll be killed for sure if I get careless.
Among these monsters, the most troublesome one is standing in front of me.
These ones are a little bigger than me.
There’s one hovering, and one clad in armor looking at me with battleaxe in hand.
Demons.
It’s not my first time fighting them, but I remember being attacked by powerful magic and almost killed. Back then, I won with the magic mirror armor, but this time there’s also a front line warrior.
I can sense dangerous magic energy from the magic user in the air, and the one with the battleaxe looks very proficient.
A chill runs down my back.
My footing is poor on this mountainside, but I hold up my greatsword of fortitude and don’t let a single move of theirs escape my sight.
Fuuma is intimidating them too, and also deploying the rising dragon chakram, ready to fight at any time.
I hear the hum of magic energy from the mage. At the same time, the warrior quickly closes the distance to swing the battleaxe down and crush me.
I swing my greatsword as that vicious weapon goes for my head, but its power means I have a hard time deflecting it, and have to jump to the side.
But the battleaxe turns at a right angle after me. I block with the greatsword of fortitude, but the monster uses its strength to fling me away.
I control magic energy while rolling on the ground, and aim a Speed Up magic circle towards the warrior as it follows me to fire a rock spear.
The magic is smacked down by the battleaxe, but then ten wind clad chakram attack it.
It can’t deal with them, and stops to focus on defense.
I want to fire magic, but they won’t let me.
It takes a big jump back, and the mage that’s hovering fires magic at me.
It’s black lightning. It comes straight at me, and I can’t dodge even though I know it’s coming.
I infuse the magic mirror shield with magic energy, and get ready.
I can’t deflect it.
I choose to nullify it, and use See Through to predict when it’s coming while deploying the magic mirror shield.
The sound of thunder echoes, and my left arm stings a little.
“Limit Break.”
I managed to block it, but the demons aren’t done attacking.
The warrior sees the magic dissipating, and comes to attack.
I didn’t want to use Limit Break, because I want to save the magic energy, but I have no choice.
“Fuuma! Handle the mage!!”
Fuuma is about to attack the warrior, but it immediately changes its target and files towards the mage.
Fuuma can’t beat a demon.
There’s the power of the magic, but even with the chakram, it’s pretty much impossible for Fuuma to win up close.
So I need to take the warrior down quickly.
That said, it won’t go down easily even after using Limit Break. I’ve gotten stronger, but it feels something made it stronger too.
The demon warrior is clad in darkness, steps forward feeling quicker and sharper than before, and sweeps with excellent skill.
I decide it’s too dangerous to block, and pull back, but suddenly darkness extends from the battleaxe after my neck.
I somehow manage to react and block with my greatsword, and suddenly, the darkness dissipates, goes over the greatsword, and reaches my neck.
Heat runs through my neck.
I create a gale with Wind Magic to take a lot of distance, and use Parallel Thinking to heal my neck.
I vomit blood stuck in my throat, and the demon warrior’s ugly face twists into a smirk.
It’s very happy to kill me.
But in return, I use a wind blade to cut its head.
It looks like it doesn’t know what happened, and it looks shocked even as its head leaves its body.
Even I didn’t know if it would work, so I’m just glad it did.
I feel like I’ve grown recently, especially in terms of my skills, and I’ve been able to do things I couldn’t before.
This time, I controlled the magic energy leaking from the demon in the range of Spatial Grasp, and created a wind blade near its neck from a distance.
It’s easy to say, but I can only use it when Limit Break is active, and I have to use Parallel Thinking to activate both Spatial Grasp, Magic Energy Control, and use Wind Magic. It’s quite the strain.
And I’m using my opponent’s magic energy, so it won’t work on mage types with a good knowledge of magic energy. And even then, if it sees through the first move, it can deal with it.
Basically, it’s a one and done.
I hear a yell from the air like it’s asking for help.
Fuuma and the mage are having a magic battle, but it looks like Fuuma is being overpowered.
Fuuma is only using wind magic, but the demon is using magic of all kinds of elements.
It’s been holding on with numbers and force, but its mobility is dropping, and it looks like it could be shot down at any moment.
Good job buying time, I say as I go take down the mage.
Once that’s done, I collect the dropped equipment.
I feel like I’ve found my first real loot since falling into The Abyss. I’ve been collecting remains from monsters, but who knows if I’ll ever cash them out.
I take the warrior’s battleaxe and armor, and the staff from the mage. The mage is wearing robes, but they’re in tatters from the fight.
Good job, Fuuma, I say as I cast Healing Magic and pet its head.
It used to bite my head like it was normal when I pet its head, but it’s been quieter ever since we got here.
Does it understand the situation? Has it grown? Regardless, I think it’s progress.
I’ve been fighting a lot of monsters in The Abyss, and many are so strong that I can’t let my guard down for a moment. It would be stupid to have to spend magic energy on healing myself because my ally attacked me, so I welcome this change.
Monsters come out in great numbers and variety at night, and while they’re not as strong as the daytime ones, I can’t rest after defeating one.
It’d be nice to take turns keeping watch, but when I rest, Fuuma wants to rest with me, so we’re still working on that.
Well, if I lay the groundwork, I can rest for a few dozen minutes or even take a nap.
I want a place to sleep properly, but this situation won’t allow that. Doing that equals death.
I doze off while thinking that, and my Spatial Grasp detects monsters.
A switch turns on inside my head, and I increase my magic energy in preparation for the incoming monster.
